Coach: Randy Edsall (9th year at Connecticut)
Team Name: Huskies
2006 Overall Record: 4-8
Returning Starters: 14
Last season, the Connecticut Huskies (4- 8 overall, 1- 6 Big East) tied for 7th in the Big East. The big deal of the season was the team's 46- 45 double overtime win versus the Pitt Panthers.
The Huskies' offense averaged only 21.4 PPG. Their running game was ranked 13th in the nation, while their West Coast spread offense garnered a ranking of 110. For this team to win, they must find a way to make their air game work. Former QB D.J. Hernandez has been converted to WR, where he should make an impact. The new QB will either be sophomore Dennis Brown or junior college standout Tyler Lorenzen. Sophomore TB Donald Brown (161 CAR, 896 YDs, 7 TDs) did yeoman's work on the ground in five starts. This should be a breakout year for the gritty back. The line is young and new.
The defensive frontline looks to be UConn's fastest and most athletic in a long time. Junior DE Cody Brown (4.5 sacks) and senior DT Dan Davis are capable of creating havoc at and behind opponent frontlines. Senior MLB Danny Lantana (99 tackles, 45 sacks) and senior OLB Ryan Henagar (92 tackles, 50 solo) are top players on a tough unit and will be instrumental stoppers. The secondary returns two players with four interceptions each and includes the talented CB Darius Butler. The safeties are unknown and cause for concern. Last year this team had a rough time stopping the ground game; they should do better this season.
The Huskies have not been able to beat any top 25 teams. If they can upset Louisville, Rutgers or West Virginia, they will have snapped that streak. Toss-up games include Duke and Syracuse. Seven wins are possible win an upset victory and both swing games going their way.
