Rich Rodriguez college football coach
Michigan's Rich Rodriguez a head coach to keep an eye on
With the start of college football season, there is no preseason to gauge how a team looks. It’s important for college football handicappers to have the right information and know which team will start off hot or cold.  There are a lot ways to analyze the season. From statistical review to how many starters are returning.  But like the old saying a fish rots from the head down, it may serve a person to take a look at some of the coaches who have a lot to prove or a lot of pressure. The Big 10 seems to have a lot of coaches facing the wrath of their alumni.

TCU Football in the Mounatin West Conference
TCU is a big reason why the Mountain West Conference is number 1 in our college football rankings
When we talk about college football betting virtually all of our attention is directed towards the BCS conferences. That’s where most of the glamour is, and for fans who aren’t hardcore there is more than enough to keep them interested. There is a lot of good football being played every week in the other five conference in the FBS, and I’m not just talking about Boise State and Utah, either. Here’s a look at how those five conferences stack up from best to worst from a college football betting perspective as we get ready for the start of this season:

Could this be the year Spurrier and the Gamecocks put it all together?
Everyone know about the teams that are expected to be the truly elite squads in college football this year – Alabama, Ohio State, Boise State and so on. We also know about the teams that just aren’t ready for prime time. Where the real opportunities are for college football handicappers, though, is in spotting the teams poised have a better season than people expect. Being ahead of the betting public is always a good place to be. Here are three teams that have the potential to be surprisingly good – perhaps even good enough to win their conferences, or in one case at least their division:

Stanford Football
No Toby Gerhart, No Problem, the Cardinal are still going to light up the scoreboard this year
Everyone who does college football betting even a little bit knows which high profile offenses are going to be potent. Boise State won’t sneak up on anyone this year, and teams like Texas, Florida, and Ohio State never do. Most people probably know that teams like Houston are going to pile up the points, too. For bettors, knowing about those offenses and what they are capable of isn’t going to provide much of an edge. What is potentially far more powerful, though, is being aware of the potentially potent offenses that aren’t on the public radar. If you know that an offense if far more capable than most people seem to think then you can be in good shape whether you are betting sides or totals on the college football over under line. Here are four teams that have potentially potent offenses this year:

Lane Kiffin makes me laugh. I can say that because he has never done anything to a team that I really care about. The Raiders mean nothing to me, I detest Peyton Manning so I clearly have no love for Tennessee, and don’t like USC because they are so sickeningly unlikable, but I certainly don’t hate them in any real way – it’s not like they are Ohio State or anything. Based on the amount of press he is getting these days, though, it seems obvious that I am the exception and not the rule when it comes to the degree to which his actions bother me. His actions over the last few years have been very circus-like, and the intense scrutiny the media has placed him under has given the circus at least three rings. I’m just amused by the whole situation but a whole lot of people aren’t. There is a great deal of intensity and bitterness, and people are reacting emotionally and not rationally to him. Anytime a great deal of emotion is involved in a situation bettors have to be particularly aware of what is going on, and what impact it could have on the teams and players involved and, more importantly, on the odds on the games in question. As you try to decode Kiffin’s impact on the college football betting lines this fall, and the opportunities that it will create, here are four things to consider:

Big East Football
Pittsburgh is one of the co-favorites to win the Big East Conference and our pick to do so
The Big East will be very competitive this season as 6 of the 8 teams have a chance of winning the conference. Only Syracuse and Louisville don’t really have a shot at the title. The problem with such a competitive league is that the teams will beat up on each other, making it possible that the conference champ might have 2 or 3 losses at the end of the season. Here is a look at each of the individual teams. College football odds to win the Big East conference title are from Bodog and listed in parentheses.
