Coach: Ralph Friedgen (7th year at Maryland)
Team Name: Terrapins
2006 Overall Record: 9-4
Returning Starters: 14
After finishing tied for second in the ACC Atlantic, the Maryland Terrapins (9- 4 overall, 5- 3 ACC) went on to defeat Purdue 24- 7 in the Champs Bowl. It will be tough for the Terrapins to repeat that performance in 2007.
Most of the offense on this team is generated by the ground game. Maryland has two problems—former starting QB Sam Hollenbach is gone and the Terrapin receivers can't seem to hold onto the ball. Senior TB Lance Ball (174 CAR, 815 YDs, 8 TDs) can cut and run between tacklers. TB Keon Lattimore (743 YDs, 3 TDs), also a senior, is a breakaway threat. Three starters return to the offensive line, but they must stay healthy; there's little depth. Sophomore Darrius Heyward-Bey (45 REC, 694 YDs, 5 TDs) is the team's best receiver. Junior Jordan Steffy and sophomore Josh Portis are both in contention for the QB spot.
The defensive frontline returns all four starters—seniors and juniors. The Terrapins ranked 96th nationally versus the run and; with this line, they should be able to do better. Senior Dre Moore and junior Jeremy Navarre recorded 3.5 sacks each. Junior WLB Erin Henderson (114 tackles, 54 solo) returns as the leading tackler. The middle is a big question mark. The secondary has speed and athleticism, but they are without former standout Josh Wilson. Wilson was a true team leader, who kept things together on and off the field. At free safety Christian Varner is a tough and hard hitter.
Six wins are possible if Maryland can win back-to-back swing games at home against Virginia and Clemson. They also play West Virginia at home and may be able to pull an upset off against the Mountaineers. Seven wins and this team goes to a bowl game. That won't be easy, but it can happen.
