Coach: Bobby Bowden (32nd year at Florida State)
Team Name: Seminoles
2006 Overall Record: 7-6
Returning Starters: 14

This looks like the year that the Florida State Seminoles (7- 6 overall, 3- 5 ACC), the team that finished fifth in the Atlantic division in 2006, takes first-place. After the regular season last year, the Seminoles beat the UCLA Bruins in the Emerald Bowl 44- 27.

There's a new offensive coordinator on board. Coach Bobby Bowden brought in Jimbo Fisher to create big play capabilities. Junior QB Drew Weatherford (57.6% COMP, 2,154 YDs, 12 TDs, 11 INTs) enters his third season with a slew of doubts haunting him, Weatherford made too many bad decisions, over or under-threw too many receivers and made much too many poor reads in 2006. Junior backup Xavier Lee will compete for that starting role. Returning receivers include junior Gregg Carr (34 REC, 619 YDs, 18.2 AVG, 12 TDs) and senior De'Cody Fagg (37 REC, 439 YDs, 11.9 AVG, 1 TD). Although both have playmaker potential, both have also shown inconsistency. At TB junior Antone Smith (88 CAR, 456 YDs, 5.2 AVG, 5 TDs) gets the start this season. Smith can break one at any time. He's a solid runner. New line coach Rick Trickett has been brought in to make that group a cohesive unit.

The Noles' defense held teams to 19.9 PPG and performed especially well against the run where they were rated 12th nationally. Senior nose guard Andre Fluellen is an expert run stopper. The Seminoles are counting on sophomore DE Everette Brown to put pressure on opposing QBs. Senior free safety Roger Williams (4 INTs) is quick and agile, while sophomore rover Myron Rolle (77 tackles, 31 solo) is due to become a standout this season. Junior corner Tony Carter is a dynamite pass defender.

The Seminoles would like to beat the Florida Gators but that will be difficult, while swing games include those versus Alabama, Wake Forest, Miami and Boston College. This is a tough schedule but the Florida State looks to be up to it. Taking the ACC and landing a prestigious bowl invitation are a strong possibility.
