Coach: Chan Gailey (6th year at Georgia Tech)
Team Name: Yellow Jackets
2006 Overall Record: 9-5
Returning Starters: 15

In 2006, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9- 5 overall, 7- 1 ACC) finished first in the ACC Coastal and then lost to Wake Forest 6- 9 in the conference championship game. They also lost a tough one to West Virginia 35- 38 in the Gator Bowl. Tech has said good-bye to a four-year starting QB and their All-American WR. Still, the team looks like a contender.

The offense, which scored an average of 24.9 PPG, sees senior Tashard Choice (297 CAR, 1,473 YDs, 12 TDs) return. Choice was the ACC's leading rusher. The frontline is stacked, making the Jackets' running game especially dangerous. New QB, junior Taylor Bennett (52% COMP, 523 YDs, 5 TDs, 2 INTs), should have plenty of protection. Look for new coordinator John Bond to spread the field more. Junior WR James Johnson (39 REC, 608 YDs, 7 TDs) returns and will be asked to step-up.

The defense is blitz centered and attacks quarterbacks from all angles. Senior MLB Philip Wheeler (89 tackles, 52 solo, 9 sacks) is one of the best in the nation and the anchor of the defense. Senior strong safety Jamal Lewis is athletic and reads defenses well; he's a major attribute. Djay Jones (4 INTs) plays the other safety position with finesse. The corners are solid but not spectacular. Look for the defensive line to be tough, but a bit stressed without tackle Joe Annoai. There could be some problems there. Various schemes will keep opponents guessing.

This Georgia Yellow Jackets team will be competitive, but it's unlikely they will take the ACC Coastal in 2007. Three swing games against Miami, Virginia Tech and Georgia will determine the team's ultimate fate. Nine wins are certainly probable and more than nine possible. They will be bowl bound to somewhere.
