The Orioles started the Buck Showalter-era with a victory in the series opening game against the Angels.

Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles

Los Angeles lost for the ninth time in 12 games and could possibly drop below .500 for the first time since June 2.  The game also marked the move of Torii Hunter going from his regular position of center field to right.  “It was different, but I was still in the game in the outfield,” Hunter said.  The Angels have been unable to collect back-to-back victories since June 16-17 and are 7-10 since the All-Star break.  Los Angeles is an even 1-1 this month (-20) and is 33-26 in August the past three years (-420).  The club will be a road favorite of -125 to -150 for just the fourth time this year (1-2, -170), but has excelled in his role the past three seasons, producing a 29-16 record (+620).  Despite the 6-3 loss in the series opener, the team is 10-4 in their last 14 games in Baltimore.

The Tigers are an overvalued favorite with a rookie making just his third career start, but the Orioles can’t be trusted anywhere.

Baltimore Orioles at Detroit Tigers

Baltimore avoided a three-game sweep on Sunday by defeating the Boston Red Sox, 6-1, at Fenway Park.  The Orioles have lost 16 straight road series dating back to last September.  The offense has been a major weakness for the last place club in the AL East, managing to be shut out or score one run 21 times and have scored three runs or fewer 46 times in the first 80 games of the season.  With the low-scoring from the Orioles, the total in their games stands at 33-44-3 O/U for the season.  Baltimore is hitting a combined .242 on the road and scoring an average of just 3.1 runs.

San Diego looks to push its record to a game above .500 this month and hold onto first place in the NL West.

Baltimore Orioles at San Diego Padres

Baltimore held a 2-1 lead on Friday night heading into the bottom of the ninth, only to see the Padres rally for a 3-2 victory behind 1B Adrian Gonzalez’s bases loaded single.  The club has converted just 47.8 percent of its save opportunities, the lowest percentage in the major leagues.  The Orioles have now lost 18 of their last 21 games, being outscored 127-50 over that span.  Friday’s loss also dropped the club to 2-8 in interleague play this year.  In facing a left-handed starter tonight, Baltimore’s offense will be paced by OF Nick Markakis, who leads all left-handed batters in baseball with a .375 batting average against them.  The club has been outscored 65-28 in their last 12 road games, as they are 8-37 in their last 45 games away from Camden Yards.

The Giants two-time Cy Young winner takes to the mound, looking to gain more confidence against the worst team in baseball.

Baltimore Orioles at San Francisco Giants

Baltimore grabbed a 4-1 victory in the second game of this three-game series last night, winning for just the third time in their last 19 games.  The Orioles have been outscored 118-45 over that span.  Tuesday’s victory also snapped the team’s nine-game road losing streak, as opponents held a 55-19 advantage in those games.  OF Adam Jones launched a solo home run in leading the Orioles offense, but the team has still hit just 51 home runs on the year, good for 10th in the American League and 51 behind league-leading Toronto.  Baltimore is still the only team in baseball without a home run from its first baseman.  Scoring runs is still difficult for the group, managing to score just 39 runs in their last 17 games and 45 runs in their last 19 games.

The Mets are on the verge of doing something for possibly the first time in franchise history.

New York Mets at Baltimore Orioles

New York’s pitching staff dominated Baltimore hitters for a second consecutive night, picking up a 3-1 victory on Saturday night and capturing its first road series win of the season.  The Mets lead the majors with a 2.31 ERA in June, leading the team to an 8-2 record during the month (+540).  The offense is hoping to get a contribution from OF Jason Bay in the series finale, as he’s suffering from a 0-for-16 slump.  It’s hard to imagine that he breaks out this afternoon due to his .152 average (5-for-33) in his last nine games at Camden Yards.  The Mets are 4-1 in interleague play this year (+380) and 109-107 overall against the American League since 1997.
