The Cardinals have the best home pitcher in baseball going for them in the finale of this short two-game set at Busch Stadium.

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals

Milwaukee picked up a 3-2 road victory in the first of a two-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.  Third baseman Casey McGehee was the different in last night’s contest, hitting a two-run homer off Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia.  McGehee is hitting .411 with five homers and 19 RBIs in his last 14 games.  “He’s on fire,” manager Ken Macha said.  “I told him I didn’t want to stand next to him because I was afraid of spontaneous combustion.”  Each of the last four Brewers games have been decided by just a single run, as they are 2-2 in that span and 20-14 overall in one-run contests.  Since the start of the 2008 season, Milwaukee has the second-highest winning percentage at Busch Stadium of any visiting National League team (17-9, .654).    The Brewers are 0-3 as a road underdog of +200 to +225 this season and 1-6 in this situation the last three years (-390).

The Angels return home after a successful 11-3 road trip and continue interleague play against the visiting Brewers.

Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Angels

Milwaukee continues its 15-game interleague schedule tonight with the first of three games at Los Angeles.  The Brewers are 86-104 all-time during interleague play, including 2-4 this season (-180) and 5-10 last season.  Tonight’s contest is the Brewers’ first game against the Angels since the team took two of three games in Anaheim in 2004.  The club managed to post an even 3-3 record on its recent homestand despite managing just a .125 (6-for-48) batting average with runners in scoring position.  One player that has carried the offense is outfielder Corey Hart, hitting 14 home runs in his last 28 games, tops in the majors over that span.  The Brewers bullpen has been much better of late, posting a 2.96 ERA over its last eight games.

There are some pitchers out there who are consistently good at going under the posted total, and others who have never met a total that they can’t go over. Some of that is related to their ERA and the way they are pitching – bad pitcher are going to allow a lot of runs and make t easier to go over, while great pitchers are stingy with runs and go deep in games, and it is hard to go over. There is more to it than just that, though. The pitchers have a big impact on the total that the oddsmakers set, so it only makes sense that both the performance and the public perception of those pitchers factors heavily into the line as it is set. A pitcher that performs at a higher level than the public perceives him to, then, could be a useful pitcher to play on the over/under. Here’s a look at 10 guys who have been particularly useful against the total so far this year:
