John Brantley Florida Gators
New Florida Gators Starting Quarterback John Brantley
The best part of college football is that no team can ever be complacent. No matter how good a player is or how well he fits with a team and a system he can’t play for more than four years. That means that good teams have to be on top of their game and their recruiting to stay good, and teams always have a chance to climb into the upper echelons when a new set of players arrives in town. That constant change can be extremely stressful for fans – especially when your starting quarterback is forced to move on. In some cases a departing quarterback can start a serious decline for a team – like when Chad Henne left Michigan. Other times, though, a new guy steps in and is able to maintain the level of play or even improve it. Here’s a look at four teams which are facing big quarterback changes this year that have a good chance of coming through it just fine:

The Cubs have picked up the first two games of the series and are after more, but the road team has other ideas.

Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs

Philadelphia has dropped the first two games of this four-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, but will now turn to its pair of aces over the weekend.  “We need to win tomorrow,” manager Charlie Manuel said.  “We’ll work on Sunday when we get there.”  The Phillies are now a game under .500 in July (6-7, -280), after going 20-7 during the month last season.  The club is still 17-10 against NL Central teams this season, which is similar to its 23-16 mark against the division in 2009.  First baseman Ryan Howard has produced three home runs and six RBIs in the first two games of this series and 20 homers on the season.  Don’t expect such a low-scoring game on Saturday, with the team having a 17-11 O/U mark in daytime games.

ubaldo jimenez colorado rockies
Ubaldo Jimenez due for a poor 2nd half?
The all-star break is a very good time to evaluate what we have seen so far, and what we might expect going forward. As a bettor the thing I am most interested in is to spot pitchers who are going to have the potential to produce profits in the second half. One of the best ways I know of to do that is to look for pitchers who aren’t likely to be as productive and profitable in the second half as they were to start the season. If a pitcher has been steady and profitable to start the season then the public is going to be drawn to them. If those pitchers don’t quite measure up to their earlier levels of production then there is going to be value to be had. Here are five guys who could be poised for a downward adjustment in the second half:

The Giants remained red-hot in returning from the All-Star break, but face a team that often bounces back after a loss.

New York Mets at San Francisco Giants

New York started its season-high 11-game road trip by getting shutout in a 2-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.  The Mets have lost four of their last five games  and have managed to score just three runs in the four losses.  Despite failing to score a run, the lineup received a boost with the return of outfielder Carlos Beltran, playing his first game since May 20, 2009.  “After being out for so long and going through a very long process, I was happy,” Beltran said.  He went 1-for-4 last night and hit .367 with five RBI in 14 rehabilitation games.  New York still holds a 14-8 series edge against the Giants over the last three years and have won the last four series in the Bay Area since 2006.  The club has compiled a 14-10 record against left-handed starters this season (+420), with the total being 10-12-2 O/U in those games.

Rich Rodriguez college football coach
Michigan's Rich Rodriguez a head coach on the hot seat
When it comes to handicapping NCAA football (or any other sport, for that matter), desperate coaches can be very useful. When a coach is clearly and obviously on a hot seat and coaching for their continued employment sparks can often fly. You can’t always predict how coaches in these positions are going to respond. Some rise to the challenge by adapting their approach, adjusting their schemes, changing their staffs, and bringing renewed vigor to their job. Others get overwhelmed by the challenge and look even more lost than they already have. While you can’t be sure which approach coaches will take in these situations, what you can be fairly sure of is that something is definitely going to change, and change can be very useful for bettors who can spot it and capitalize on it. Here’s a look at five guys who are certainly on the hot seat this year:

The Phillies find themselves in a great bounceback spot at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon.

Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs

Philadelphia dropped a 12-6 decision to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Thursday night, which was the first game of an eight-game, eight day road trip.   Overall this season, the Phillies are 22-24 away from Citizens Bank Park (-520).  The club is now an even 6-6 for the month, after going a dominating 20-7 in July in 2009.  The Phillies are a disappointing 12-17 in day games this season (-1,310), which is far from the team’s 70-59 mark over the last three seasons.  The total in day games for the team stands at 17-11 O/U on the year.
