Coach: Bill Callahan (3rd year at Nebraska)
Team Name: Cornhuskers
2005 Overall Record: 7-4
2005 Big 12 Conference Record 4-4
Returning Starters: 15

The Cornhuskers should see improvement this season from senior QB Zak Taylor (55.1 COMP%, 2,653 YDS, 19 TDs, 12 INTs), who enters his second full season calling the signals. Who will start at running back is unknown, although the team seems to have talent to spare in that area.

TE Matt Herian is back after missing a year with a broken leg. Before his injury, he had good hands and speed. He could be a major factor on the field. Nebraska has depth at wide receiver with Nate Swift, Terrence Nunn, Fritz Hardy and Grant Mulkey all returning. Each of these players averaged between 10 and 14 yards a reception last season.

The offensive line struggled at the beginning of 2005 but gelled by the end of the season. They should help Nebraska’s running game.

Up front and at middle linebacker the defense, which led the nation last year with 50 sacks, looks powerful. MLB Corey McKeon had 98 tackles and 3 interceptions, while DE Adam Carriker led the team with 9.5 sacks.

The corners are well defended but the safety positions are a toss-up and the biggest concern for the team.

The away game against Texas A&M is key, while USC and Texas will probably be too tough for the team to handle. Nebraska looks like the best in the Big 12’s North Division They’ll contend for the conference championship.
