Coach: Ed Orgeron (2nd year at Mississippi)
Team Name: Rebels
2005 Overall Record: 3-8
2005 SEC Conference Record 1-7
Returning Starters: 10

Last year for the Rebels a lethargic offense (13.5 PPG) seemed to be what kept an adequate defense from winning. This year, there’s a new quarterback, Brent Schaeffer, in town. It’s hoped that the former Tennessee starter, who possesses a powerful arm, agility and speed, can make a difference.

To protect Schaeffer, Michael Oher (LT) and Darryl Harris (RT) are the talent on the offensive line, but the rest of the crew is untested and uncertain. That’s a concern no matter who’s starting at QB.

The running game looks solid with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Mico McSwain alternating at running back. The receivers are inexperienced; Carlos Suggs is the only wide receiver returning who caught a pass in 2005.

On defense, there’s hope that star middle linebacker Patrick Willis is healed and ready to go this fall. He’ll be missed greatly if he can’t perform. This season, every member of the defensive line has to be replaced, while Ole’ Miss returns three starters in the secondary. The corners are the weakest link in the club’s pass defense.

For this team, it comes down to blocking on the offense and making tackles on the defense. A sound performance by the OL will help, while on “D,” Willis needs to be there. Last year the rebels won 3, this year that number could be 5 if they can beat Vanderbilt and Mississippi State.
