This afternoon’s series finale features two of the hottest hurlers in all of baseball.

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres

Los Angeles managed to win Tuesday’s opener despite being held to five hits and only collected four in Wednesday’s 6-1 loss to the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.  “Unfortunately, when you are not scoring a lot of runs, you’re putting a great deal of stress on the pitching,” manager Joe Torre said.  The Dodgers have still won five of seven contests and sit six games back of the Padres in the division.  The club is a dominating 25-9 against NL West opponents (+1,630), which is by far the best intra-division mark in baseball.  Los Angeles made a move just before last night’s game, acquiring outfielder Scott Podsednik from the Kansas City Royals.  He’s among the major league leaders with 30 steals and batting .379 during a current 15-game hitting streak.  The Dodgers are an even 13-13 in day games (-190) this season and the total is 10-14 O/U in those contests.

One of the biggest mistakes baseball bettors – and especially those who only play the sport casually – make is to only pay attention to the pitchers with names and reputations that they know when baseball betting. Sometimes starting pitchers with names don’t perform up to those names. More significantly, there are a lot of pitchers out there that casual fans have never heard of who are providing serious boosts to the wallets of fans. Here’s a look at eight guys who aren’t exactly household names, but who should be based on the profits they have been producing this year:

The Marlins hope to avoid a three-game sweep with a favorable home umpire behind the dish.

San Diego Padres at Florida Marlins

San Diego is enjoying its current six-game road trip, posting a 4-1 record after defeating the Florida Marlins 2-1 in last night’s game.  The Padres boast a 21-14 record on the road this season (+1,300), leading a group of only three NL teams with winning records away from home.  The pitching staff has been tremendous all season, posting its 10th shutout of the year in the series opener, while leading the majors in strikeouts and strikeout/walk ratio (2.57).  First baseman Adrian Gonzalez has been instrumental in leading the Friars this month, hitting .400 with seven home runs and 20 RBI this month.  At 13-10, San Diego needs just one win over its last four games to clinch a fifth straight winning month.

San Diego comes into this weekend series winners of eight of its last 11 games, including a successful 6-3 homestand.  “We just want to keep plugging away,” Padres OF Tony Gwynn said.  The Padres dropped five of the seven games against the Phillies last season and look to gain revenge of being swept at Petco Park over that span.  This is certainly a different San Diego team, a unit that has posted a 29-15 record over its last 44 games.  The Padres have been especially good against winning ball clubs, compiling a 16-6 (+1,200) mark that’s far-different from the 74-97 (-590) record over the last three seasons.  When looking to play a total on Friday night, it’s interesting to note that the Padres have gone 7-14-2 O/U away from its pitcher friendly ballpark.
