Top 25 College Basketball Poll
If you are reading this paragraph you are curious how they determine
the rankings. We will explain how the top 25 College basketball
poll comes about. There are 72 writers that "vote"
as we like to say on who the best 25 teams in the country are.
Now because everyone doesn't agree on who the best 25 teams are
they use a point system. So each writer makes his top 25 list
and than points are awarded accordingly. First place votes are
in parentheses next to the team name.
For example if one writer thinks Duke is the best team, Duke
is than awarded 25 points. if another write thinks Duke is the
second best team, Duke is awarded an additional 24 points. This
process continues with all 72 writers making their votes on the
top 25 teams. At the end the teams are than ranked in chronological
order according to the points or votes they received.
To clarify, the maximum number of points you can get is 1800.
72 writers x 25 points for a first place vote equals a max of
1800. Every vote a team gets for being #1 is 25 points, #2 is
24 points, #3 23 points, all the way down to the 25 where the
team would get 1 point. That is the general idea of how the top
25 college basketball rankings work.
Now there are 2 different types of college basketball rankings,
the Associated Press poll and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
The top 25 rankings above are the current AP poll. It is our opinion
that the AP poll is a better indication of the teams rank in comparison
with the ESPN poll which is why we list the AP College
basketball poll at Maddux Sports.
