Monday Notes

I love the craziness of kickers in the NFL. A couple of weeks ago Shaun Suisham was the bum in Washington when he missed a kick that would have let the Redskins beat the Saints. He was cut immediately after the game. This week Dallas’ Nick Folk missed a 24 yard field goal that would have given the Cowboys an easy win, and instead forced them to sweat the end of the game. Folk was cut today as a result of that kick and his general habit of missing kicks. Ironically, Folk’s issues came against the Saints as well – at this rate no kicker is going to want to play against the Saints. The best part of this drama – the Cowboys have chosen to replace Folk with none other than Suisham. One man’s garbage…

Things are really getting out of hand for the USC Trojans. Not only do they have to deal with the embarrassment of playing in the Emerald Bowl on December 26 instead of a bowl that anyone actually cares about, but now they are going to be shorthanded. Three players have been ruled academically ineligible for the game. Even worse, Joe McKnight has stayed in L.A. while the team has traveled to San Francisco for the game. Theofficial excuse is that he has some paperwork to finish before the game, but it doesn’t take much of an imagination to figure that this has something to do with the investigation into the fancy car that he was driving around without paying for. It will be very interesting to see how effectively Pete Carroll can bounce back from the utter disaster (in USC terms) that this season has been.

This whole latest Brett Favre thing – he is reportedly upset with coach Brad Childress because Childress wanted to pull him from the game on Sunday because the offense wasn’t working – is already boring me to tears, and it only just getting started. Favre just isn’t capable of being a good citizen when times are tough – his ego won’t let him.
