2006 Akron Zips Basketball Predictions

The Akron Zips (23- 10 overall and 14 – 4 in MAC) look like the best team in their conference. Coach Keith Dambrot (42- 20 in 2 years) has amassed a team composed of talented returning juniors, transfers and freshmen. Look for the well balanced Zips to easily take the MAC.

Senior point guard Dru Joyce (10.0 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 5.0 APG) and junior backcourt men Nick Dials (10.2 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 2.7 APG) and Cedrick Middleton (8.1 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 2.0 APG) are all point producers. Joyce is the best point man in the league, bringing skills and intangibles to the table. Middleton is an excellent backup. The future at guard is freshman Steve McNees, who can shoot and hit at will.

In the frontcourt, Romeo Travis (13.8 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.9 APG) can do it all and more. He’s a rangy rebounder and a reliable scorer. His senior year should be his best yet. Sophomore Nate Linhart (5.3 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 0.9 APG) can swipe the backboard clean. Freshman center Mike Bardo brings a 6’ 9” and 240-pound frame that can dominate. Forward frosh Chris McKnight will be involved immediately.

Dambrot certainly knows how to get this team to win. His guards may be small, but they are sharpshooters and his upfront guys play tough, tenacious ball. Dambrot is also an excellent recruiter.

Last season, the Zips went to the NIT. They were defeated by Creighton 71- 60. This season the NCAA Tournament is almost a given for this club. They are fast and accurate. Dambrot is an excellent coach, who’s able to get the most out of his players. Along with fine returning players, the new class looks very good.
