2006 Milwaukee Bucks Basketball Season Preview

Although the Bucks had a losing record (40-42) last season, they snuck into the playoffs, only to be eliminated by the Pistons in round one. Milwaukee is one of the youngest teams in the league.

There’s no doubt that Michael Redd (25.4 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.9 APG, 45.0 FG%, 87.7 FT%) is an excellent shooting guard. He’s a leader on the court and a tough player. At 27 years old and with seven years in the NBA, he’s the veteran in the starting rotation. Opposite him is point guard and third-year man Maurice Williams (12.1 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 4.0 APG, 42.4 FG%, 85.0 FT%), who brings a solid shot, good defensive skills and fine decision making to the court.

Small forward Bobby Simmons (13.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.3 APG, 45.3 FG%, 82.5 FT%) must be more consistent and productive this year, while former Raptor and power forward Charlie Villanueva (13.0 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.1 APG, 46.3 FG%, 70.6 FT%) should bring speed and toughness to the Bucks. He comes to Milwaukee after only one year in the league.

Another sophomore, Andrew Bogut (9.4 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 2.3 APG, 53.3 FG%, 62.9 FT%), gets the start at center. Bogut possesses sound fundamentals and presents a big physical presence. Although not a star, he can set up a play or hit the midrange jumper. More output is expected from him in 2006-07.

In his first season as the Bucks’ head coach, Terry Stotts managed to get an inexperienced team with four new starters into the playoffs. But the rap on Stotts is that he’s too nice and doesn’t offer enough discipline to a team that really needs it. In his second season, Stotts stands to either earn the respect of this team or find himself in search of a new club.

Milwaukee needs added “D,” depth and experience to be a serious contender, but they could find themselves in the post-season again this year. Working the ball inside more and showing some patience in shot selection will help this team find its balance. Someone other than Redd has to score.
