Coach: Paul Johnson (1st year at Georgia Tech)
Team Name: Yellow Jackets
2007 Overall Record: 7-6
Returning Starters: 9

The question for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (7-8 overall, 4-4 ACC) is will they finally have some consistent sting in them in 2008? In 2007, they finished third in the ACC Coastal, going to the Humanitarian Bowl where they lost to Fresno State 28-40. This year’s edition of Georgia Tech looks to be more of the same—not good enough to contend for the division crown but having enough wins and talent to get into the post-season.

Most of the club’s offensive starters are gone. Which may just be fine since new coach Paul Johnson brings a version of the spread that will exploit the ground game and utilize the air attack to a degree. Sophomore Josh Nesbitt or senior Calvin Booker will most likely start at QB. Neither has started before. RB Jonathan Dwyer (82 CAR, 436 YDS, 9 TDs), a sophomore, posted a fine rookie season last year. Another sophomore, Qunicy Kelly, will be part of the ground game as will other talented rushers. Many of the clubs’ top receivers are gone, but there’s still enough talent to keep opponents on their heels. The offensive line returns four experienced players and should be ready to go.

Upfront on defense, Georgia Tech features All-ACC tackle Vance Walker (8.5 sacks) and at the other spot senior Darryl Richard. Both are solid players. Sophomore safety Morgan Burnett (3 INT, 57 TCKL) is back, offering speed, talent and smarts, while senior CB Jahi Word-Daniels comes back with two years of starting experience. Junior Shane Brown is the only returning starter on the LB squad.

Georgia Tech has only three tossups on their schedule. The first occurs when Mississippi State visits on September 20. Then on October 25 Virginia visits the Jackets. Finally, the upgraded Miami Hurricanes blow into town to challenge Georgia Tech. Six loses and three wins look to be assured. The other three can go either way.

Coach Johnson, who is 107-39 in 11 years, starts his first season at Georgia Tech. Johnson looks to utilize the air attack enough to make the ground game work. The Jackets have some easy teams that they can knock off early on, which will help them find their game chops. They also have enough tough teams to play and that will challenge their chances of securing a bowl berth.
