Coach: Butch Jones (2nd year at Central Michigan)
Team Name: Chippewas
2007 Overall Record: 8-6
Returning Starters: 16

The Central Michigan Chippewas (8-6 overall, 7-1 MAC West) finished first in the MAC West and then defeated the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks 35-10 for the conference championship. The Chippewas played the Purdue Boilermakers in the Motor City Bowl, losing 48-51.

In 2007, Central Michigan proved that they could rack up points. Quarterback Dan LeFevour, now entering his junior season, is an exceptional talent. LeFevour passed for 3,652 yards and 27 touchdowns while giving up 13 picks. He also carried the ball 188 times, gaining 1,122 yards and scoring 19 touchdowns. There’s talent in the receiving ranks with sophomore Antonio Brown (102 REC, 1,003 YDS, 6 TDs) and junior Bryan Anderson (90 REC, 10 TDs) being the two best pass catchers on the team.

On the other hand, the defense sometimes looked like Swiss cheese there were so many holes in it. Opponents averaged 36.9 PPG, ranking Central Michigan’s “D” 111th nationally. They were especially ineffective versus the pass, giving up 303.5 YPG, placing them 118th. The frontline is sound and effective. DE Frank Zombo (7.5 sacks), a junior, leads a line that ably pressures passers. The linebackers are also very fine and are led by sophomore Nick Bellore (102 tackles, 42 solo). The secondary needs a ton of work. Adjustments have been made and will hopefully be effective.

Eight wins are certainly attainable, while 11 are not out of the question. September 6 against Georgia looks like a sure loss. Three tossups are included in the club’s schedule. On September 20, Central Michigan visits Purdue for a game that’s too tough to call. Then in November, the team travels to Indiana and on the 1st, Ball State visits on the 19th.

This team could win its third-straight MAC title. No team has done that in the past 15 years. Head coach Butch Jones (8-6 one year) is a smart recruiter and fine developer of talent. He’s worked to improve the defense and expand the talent on offense. The “D” will be better but not spectacular, while the offense should be explosive.
