Coach: Bret Bielema (2nd year at Wisconsin)
Team Name: Badgers
2006 Overall Record: 12-1
Returning Starters: 16

The 2006 Wisconsin Badgers (12- 1 overall, 7- 1 Big Ten) finished tied for second in their conference and went on to beat Arkansas 17- 14 in the Capital One Bowl. They scored points (29.2 PPG) and stopped opponents from scoring (12.1 PPG). For first-time head coach Bret Bielema it was an amazing debut as he led the team to its best record ever (12- 1) and garnered Big Ten coach of the year honors. What's next?

The foundation for this team is a strong running game accompanied by various sets and formations dedicated to confusing opponents. Who will start at QB? Whoever it is—either Tyler Donovan (63% COMP, 564 YDs, 4 TDs, 2 INTs) or Allan Evridge (48% COMP in 2005 for Kansas State)—he will have very little experience. Both are fine athletes and the battle in camp is on. Sophomore P.J. Hill (311 CAR, 1,569 YDs, 5.0 AVG, 15 TDs) led the conference in rushing but can he deal with the physical beating? Freshman RB John Clay could make an immediate impact. The receivers include junior TE Travis Beckum (61 REC, 903 YDs, 14.8 AVG, 5 TDs) and senior WR Luke Swan (35 REC, 595 YDs, 17.0 AVG, 5 TDs). WR Paul Hubbard has good hands and speed. The offensive line is excellent.

Like other contenders, Wisconsin features a defense that shuts opponents down. Last season they allowed teams only 12.1 PPG, second best in the nation. They were impressive against the pass and in the top third of all teams versus the run. Although super DE and leader Joe Monty is gone, there are three vets upfront. Sophomore LB Elijah Hodge looks promising and should be able to fill Mark Zalewski's big shoes. The corners are solid and the safeties, although they lack experience, are talented.

A national title is not out of the question. Swing games include those against Ohio State and Michigan. Quarterback, "D" line and safeties are the issues.
