Coach: Jeff Bower (17th year at Southern Miss)
Team Name: Golden Eagles
2006 Overall Record: 9-5
Returning Starters: 14

The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (9- 5 overall, 6- 2 C-USA) finished first in the East division of C-USA and then lost to the Houston Cougars 34- 20 in the conference championship game. The Eagles then ended on an upbeat note-- beating Ohio 28- 7 in the GMAC Bowl. It was the team's fifth straight bowl appearance and third straight bowl win.

Senior QB Jeremy Young (57.3% COMP, 1,769 YDs, 12 TDs, 6 INTs) and sophomore TB Damon Fletcher (276 CAR, 1,388 YDs, 5.0 AVG, 11 TDs) lead an aggressive offense that piled up a school-record 4,635 yards. Fletcher grinds out yards, while sophomore TB Tory Harrison is the team's breakaway threat. Young played most of last season injured and had problems with consistency. He's healthy and that's good news. Junior TE Shawn Nelson (36 REC, 506 YDs, 3 TDs) returns as the club's leading receiver. There's little experience in the interior of the O-line and that's a concern.

Eight players return to a defense that held teams to 18.6 PPG. The pass defense was solid, ranked 26th nationally. Senior FS LeVance Richmond returns as the leading interception man (4 INTs) and senior SS Brandon Sumrall brings his all-conference talents to the field for one more season. The corners are both new starters with some experience, good speed and talent. MLB Gerald McRath (104 tackles, 59 solo) plays with drive and energy and is the main-man on a unit that is very experienced. The frontline, which includes DE and sack leader Robert Henderson (4.5), returns three of four starters.

The Southern Mississippi Eagles face a tough schedule that includes swing games against Boise State and UCF and a chance to upset Tennessee. A first-place finish is certainly possible for this dynamic team. They must do better at stopping the run.

Just because a team doesn't reside in the SEC, Big East, Pac-Ten, Big Ten, Big 12, or ACC conference doesn't mean they can't play for the national title. Look for either Boise State or Hawaii having the best shot at playing in a BCS bowl game this January.
