A scheduled off-day for both teams has turned into a Monday afternoon contest due to a rainout on Wednesday.

Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates

Chicago is playing its ninth game (2-6) in a stretch of 12-straight against NL Central opponents that lasts through June 10.  The Cubs are currently 1-4 on its current road trip, after dropping Sunday’s contest, 6-3, in Houston to the Astros.  The defeat dropped the Cubs to a 3-23 mark when scoring three or fewer runs this season, while they are 22-7 when scoring four or more.  Chicago is slated to face a southpaw on Monday, which has been a recipe of success in the last four opportunities.  The team is actually hitting .267 overall against lefties this season, a mark that is 12 points higher than its overall season average (.255).

A battle of NL Central opponents is featured to close out the week of MLB action.

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals

Milwaukee is playing the sixth game of its current seven-game road trip to Florida (1-3) and St. Louis (0-2).  The Brewers placed themselves in an early hole by allowing four runs in the first inning in a 5-4 loss to the Cardinals, as the team has allowed 49 runs in the first frame this season – the most of any inning.  “There’s been a bunch of games when we’ve been behind,” Brewers manager Ken Macha said.  “I’ve got no answers for that.”  The team is getting use to the idea of scheduling left-handed starters in 2010, with Sunday’s matchup representing the 30th game they’ve scheduled a southpaw against the opposition.  This represents a challenge against a Cardinals’ club that is 9-6 versus lefties this season (+80), but the total is 5-9-1 O/U in those games.

The Mets are currently the best home team in baseball and look to complete a three-game sweep.

Florida Marlins at New York Mets

Florida has dropped the first two games of its current road series against the New York Mets, after having a previous six-game winning streak against them.  The Marlins now find themselves with a 28-29 record heading into Sunday’s contest (-350).  “Bottom line is we had some opportunities to get back in the game and we’re not swinging it right now,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said.  “We’ll come back tomorrow.”  Even after losing to a left-handed pitcher on Saturday, Florida still possesses a dominating 13-7 record against southpaws this season (+570).  The Marlins still remain two games over .500 against division foes with a 13-11 record (+50) and have a good chance of grabbing the series finale with a 6-2 mark on Sunday (+460).

Two of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball headline Saturday night’s betting card.

Atlanta Braves at Los Angeles Dodgers

Atlanta’s nine-game winning streak came to an end on Friday night, dropping a 5-4 decision to Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.  Over the past 25 games, the Braves have gone 19-6, tied with today’s opponent for the best mark in baseball during that span.  1B Troy Glaus has led the team offensively since May 1st, leading the National League with 33 RBI and ranking fourth with a .339 batting average during that span.  This has proven important with star 3B Chipper Jones out with an injured right finger the past two games.  “I still feel pain when it bends either way,” Jones said.  “I’m still getting treatments and I’ll see what they say.”  Atlanta batters have collected an MLB-best 247 walks, which could prove effective against its opposing hurler tonight, as Chad Billingsley has walked 16 batters in his 24.2 innings of work against the Braves.  The Braves check in with a 10-12 record this season when following a loss (-320).

The Rangers are marked as a home underdog on Saturday afternoon, as they host the best team in Major League Baseball.

Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers

Tampa Bay is currently 2-2 on its current road trip after dropping the series opener at Texas, 9-6, at the Ballpark in Arlington.  Friday night’s defeat dropped the team to 26-3 on the year when producing five or more runs at the plate.  The Rays are still a dominating 21-7 on the road (+1,400), as only six major league teams have had a better road record after 28 games since 1900.  The team has outscored opponents 166-89 away from Tropicana Field.  Tampa is now 2-1 this month, but has compiled an impressive 37-18 record over the last three years during June (+1,790).  Total bettors need to be aware that the pitching staff has allowed only 198 runs this season, the fewest in the American League (25-28 O/U).

San Diego comes into this weekend series winners of eight of its last 11 games, including a successful 6-3 homestand.  “We just want to keep plugging away,” Padres OF Tony Gwynn said.  The Padres dropped five of the seven games against the Phillies last season and look to gain revenge of being swept at Petco Park over that span.  This is certainly a different San Diego team, a unit that has posted a 29-15 record over its last 44 games.  The Padres have been especially good against winning ball clubs, compiling a 16-6 (+1,200) mark that’s far-different from the 74-97 (-590) record over the last three seasons.  When looking to play a total on Friday night, it’s interesting to note that the Padres have gone 7-14-2 O/U away from its pitcher friendly ballpark.

A pair of aces matchup against each other in the series finale.

Los Angeles Angels at Kansas City Royals

Los Angeles picked up its sixth win in eight games on Wednesday night, grabbing a 7-2 road victory over the Kansas City.  The Angels have now won 11 of their last 13 games against the Royals, including eight of the last 10 at Kauffman Stadium.  The team’s offense is currently searching for someone to replace 1B Kendry Morales, who is on the disabled list with a broken leg.  Manager Mike Scioscia may have found a temporary solution, giving C/DH Mike Napoli his second start at the position.  He enjoyed a successful month of May, hitting .322 with eight home runs and 17 RBIs.  “Mike’s value to our team is important at any time,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.  Los Angeles has compiled an 11-8 daytime mark this season (+360) and the team is 79-34 over the last three years (+4,610).
