The Yankees look to breakthrough against tonight’s starter in the first game of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium.

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees

Seattle continues its season-high 12-game road trip in taking on the New York Yankees in a three-game set in the Bronx.  The Mariners are averaging a league-worst 3.3 runs per game and have managed to hit just 75 home runs this season.  The club is a solid 6-3 under interim manager Daren Brown and is coming off back-to-back wins over the Baltimore Orioles.  Offensively, the team is being led by second baseman Chone Figgins, as he has collected a hit in 15 of his past 21 games.  Over its past 11 games, the bullpen has allowed just seven earned runs on 18 hits in 28 innings, producing a 2.25 ERA in the process.  Seattle is 20-41 on the road overall this season (-1,810) and the total is 30-26 O/U over that span.  The Mariners are also 4-12 as a road underdog of +100 to +125 (-780) and 23-31 in this situation the last three years (-540).

The Mariners send out another ace in trying to pick up a road series victory over the Yankees.

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees

Seattle claimed a 7-4 road victory in the series opener over the New York Yankees, as stating pitcher Cliff Lee tallied his third straight complete game.  “It obviously is a very good lineup,” Lee said.  “They are the defending world champions and some additions make them that much better.”  The Mariners have won eight of their last 11 games, while looking to pick up a road series victory for the first time since April.  The club is looking to finish the month with a winning record, standing at 13-12 in June. When you are handicapping baseball one of the easiest traps to fall into is the curse of the big name pitcher. Sometimes guys who have built a reputation up over years of excellence just aren’t performing at a level that matches that reputation. If you bet on them based on what they were or can be and not what they currently are then you’re just throwing away your money. There’s no value in the bets and there’s a much better chance than you expect that you are going to lose. Here’s a look at five guys with big reputations who haven’t been doing bettors any favors this season:

Something changes in baseball when the calendar turns to June. Through April and May we will often see players and pitchers post numbers that are far better than they were expected to, or teams that get off to shockingly good starts. By June, though, the season is a third over, and the weight of numbers and reality starts to weigh on players. Overachieving players start to come back to earth, and teams that are playing beyond themselves find that they just can’t do it anymore. June can be especially cruel for pitchers. By the time June dawns starting pitchers have faced many of their rivals at least once, and there is a large sample size of recent performances for opposing teams to scout before they face the pitchers. Good pitchers will still continue to be good pitchers, but those who are getting by because of unexpected or unfamiliar stuff aren’t going to get away with it anymore. Pitchers also have 10 or a dozen starts under their belts, so they are starting to feel the wear and tear of the season on their arms.

Aces are wild in this AL West showdown featuring two teams that are searching for some type of momentum.

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels

Seattle is enjoying a three-game win streak (+307) and has won five of its last seven games due to an offensive resurgence.  Over the last six games, the offense is batting .391 with runners in scoring position, which is a dramatic difference from batting .235 in the first 41 games of the season.  This production has led to the team going over the total in four straight games for the first time all season.  OF Ichiro Suzuki has never been the team’s problem during the month of May, coming in with the highest career batting average for a player with a minimum of 300 plate appearances (.363).  The Mariners are 8-16 this month (-1,000) and have a horrible 27-54 (-3,110) record over the last three years in May.
