Peyton Manning is currently the 2nd choice at 7 to 1 in the 2010 NFL MVP betting odds
As the regular season gets underway you can’t help but think about how the whole season is going to play out. One logical way to do that is by looking at the odds available for the potential NFL MVP. Here’s how Bodog has the field set out:

NFL Week 1 Odds Have Seen Quite a Few Big Shifts in the Betting Lines
The NFL Week 1 odds have been released for a while and most of the sharp bettors have hammered these to where they should be, but does not mean there will be some movement with last-minute injuries, personnel moves.  You can view every single games point spread and total on our NFL odds page when you have finished reading this article.

It is going to take Robert Marve a little time, but expect Purdue to have a winning record against the spread when it is all said and done this year
As you would expect there were a lot of college football teams that didn’t look particularly impressive in their season debuts. The public will take note of those performances, and could start to form a negative opinion of the team in general. Once an opinion is formed early it it can be very slow to change – especially if the team stays under the radar the rest of the way through the season. Here’s a look at six teams that started the season weakly, but which should be poised to be better as the season progresses. I’m not suggesting by any means that these teams are going to go on to win their conferences and shock the world. They are just teams that stand a good chance of performing better than the public perception of them as the season progresses and they settle into their games. As you know, if public perception doesn’t match up to actual performance then there is probably value to be had.

Brett Favre and the Vikings are Clearly Overated
The hype machine is working at full capacity in the NFL. You don’t have to look to hard to find someone who is optimistic about virtually every team in the NFL – every single one is poised for big things if you believe the hype. Not every team can be successful, though, so unless the rules have changed this year many of those teams are going to be disappointments because the hype just doesn’t match reality. Based on a combination of future odds and media coverage here are four teams that are getting more love than I think they deserve. Yes, I am calling them overrated:

The Phillies look to regain the top spot in the NL East division, but will have to fight off the Fish to get there.

Florida Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies

Florida gained a split in the Labor Day doubleheader and has actually gone 5-5 over its last 10 games.  The Marlins earned a 7-1 victory in the first game to improve their record to four games over .500 for the first time this year, only to drop the second game and fall to 70-67 at the end of the night.  “It’s a long shot, but we’re going to keep playing hard,” Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said about the team’s playoff chances.      The club is 4-3 in Philadelphia this season, but is trailing the season series 5-8 overall and own a all-time record of 131-149 against the Phillies.  Florida has a solid 32-28 mark against divisional foes this season (+360) and the total is 32-25 O/U in those contests.

When it comes to looking for teams to get behind as a bettor in college football, there is one type I like most. There are the teams that everyone knows are good, and the ones that are really lousy, but there is only so much opportunity in those. What I really like is the teams that are likely to be solidly better than people expect them to be. The public is very quick to develop expectations for teams, and those expectations aren’t always grounded in truth. If you can spot teams that are better than the public perception of them than you can often find very attractive value. Here are five teams that we pegged as potentially under-appreciated by the public prior to the season and as we head into week 2 of the season it is interesting to note that these teams went 4-1 ATS in week 1.

USC has a new coach and limited scholarship players, but the public will continue to back them making them overvalued
Every year in college football there are a couple of high profile, very popular teams that draw a whole lot of public action and then put the money in a big pile and burn it up. Last year Texas was a brutal team against the college football spreads – 5-7-1. The year before USC wasn’t a particularly good bet. In 2007, neither USC nor LSU performed for bettors like the top five teams that they were. The betting public assumes that a team that wins consistently and does it in impressive fashion is a good bet, so when they aren’t regularly covering spreads it can be costly. Here’s a look at five teams that have the potential to be high profile betting disappointments this year:

Jacory Harris Miami Hurricanes Football
With a tough 4 game schedule ahead, a couple lossess could send this hurricane team into a major slide
Every year in college football handicapping there seems to be at least one team that starts out with monstrous expectations but just can’t live up to them. In 2007 my beloved Michigan was a top five and a serious national championship contender heading into the season. And then Appalachian State happened. Just typing those words makes me ill. In 2008 Georgia started the year as the top team in the country, but were lucky to only lose three games given the way they played. Last year it was Ole Miss that was supposed to make it big as Jevan Snead won the Heisman. Snead was a disaster and the team lost four games. The obvious question, then, is which touted team is going to flame out this year? Here are three good candidates for handicappers to consider fading if things dont go there way:

Week 1 NFL Lines
The week 1 nfl betting lines are posted with thoughts of the games as well
The NFL regular season kicks off this Thursday night when the New Orleans Saints begin their championship defense at home against the Minnesota Vikings. The game is a rematch of last year’s NFC title game, which the Saints won in overtime. The Saints looked good in the preseason. Drew Brees is an elite quarterback, and Reggie Bush might be ready to have his break-out season this year. For the Vikings, Brett Favre is back for his final season yet again. Sage Rosenfels was traded to the New York Giants, which means Tavaris Jackson is the established backup should Favre fall to injury. After the way the Saints went after Favre last year, that scenario is certainly a possibility. The absence of Sidney Rice is a big loss for Minnesota. The public likes the Saints at nearly 4:1. As you can see on our NFL betting lines page – or the table below – the line opened with New Orleans favored by 4 ½ points. Most books have stayed there, though a couple have moved up to 5 points.
