We have also included 5Dimes current NFL football lines to compare. The column titled open is the first number Bookmaker opened up at. Bookmaker’s week 1 odds have been out for a few weeks now and as you can see to this point the lines makers have done a great job as very few of the week 1 point spreads have moved much at all. Minnesota has seen a little action going from 4.5 to 4.

This is why I hate the 2-3-2 format. I’m neither a Celtics nor a Lakers fan, but I don’t like that the team with home-court advantage in the NBA Finals gets put in this situation. The Lakers lost Game 2 Sunday and now have to steal one in Boston in one of the next three games.
Something changes in baseball when the calendar turns to June. Through April and May we will often see players and pitchers post numbers that are far better than they were expected to, or teams that get off to shockingly good starts. By June, though, the season is a third over, and the weight of numbers and reality starts to weigh on players. Overachieving players start to come back to earth, and teams that are playing beyond themselves find that they just can’t do it anymore. June can be especially cruel for pitchers. By the time June dawns starting pitchers have faced many of their rivals at least once, and there is a large sample size of recent performances for opposing teams to scout before they face the pitchers. Good pitchers will still continue to be good pitchers, but those who are getting by because of unexpected or unfamiliar stuff aren’t going to get away with it anymore. Pitchers also have 10 or a dozen starts under their belts, so they are starting to feel the wear and tear of the season on their arms.

The Cardinals may have been sluggish in Game 1 after playing on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball the night before, but expect a better performance with one of their aces taking the hill tonight.

Falcons OG Ojinaka suspended for season opener
Atlanta Falcons offensive guard Quinn Ojinaka has been suspended for one game. The NFL suspended the 26-year-old according to its personal conduct policy. Ojinaka was arrested in May 2009 and charged with battery, after he allegedly threw his wife down the stairs and out of the house. His wife had confronted him about contacting a female friend on facebook.

The Pac-10 has given its commissioner Larry Scott the authority to look into adding more schools to the conference. Conference officials concluded Saturday that an expansion is worth looking into, but that adding new teams is not a must.

Stephen Strasburg is finally poised to make his major league debut. He made his last minor league appearance on Thursday afternoon, and barring anything unforeseen he is scheduled to join the Nationals for his first start on June 8 at home against the Pirates. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Strasburg is the most eagerly anticipated debuting pitcher in league history. Other pitchers have perhaps been as hyped, and have certainly been as talented, but the age of the internet has whipped up more of a frenzy around this one than was possible before. Strasburg’s every move has been followed since well before he was drafted, and highlights of all his minor league starts have been widely available for everyone to see. As we get ready for the arrival of the next great thing here are eight random things that are on my mind about the pitcher and the situation surrounding him:
A scheduled off-day for both teams has turned into a Monday afternoon contest due to a rainout on Wednesday.
Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates
Chicago is playing its ninth game (2-6) in a stretch of 12-straight against NL Central opponents that lasts through June 10. The Cubs are currently 1-4 on its current road trip, after dropping Sunday’s contest, 6-3, in Houston to the Astros. The defeat dropped the Cubs to a 3-23 mark when scoring three or fewer runs this season, while they are 22-7 when scoring four or more. Chicago is slated to face a southpaw on Monday, which has been a recipe of success in the last four opportunities. The team is actually hitting .267 overall against lefties this season, a mark that is 12 points higher than its overall season average (.255).

A battle of NL Central opponents is featured to close out the week of MLB action.
Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals
Milwaukee is playing the sixth game of its current seven-game road trip to Florida (1-3) and St. Louis (0-2). The Brewers placed themselves in an early hole by allowing four runs in the first inning in a 5-4 loss to the Cardinals, as the team has allowed 49 runs in the first frame this season – the most of any inning. “There’s been a bunch of games when we’ve been behind,” Brewers manager Ken Macha said. “I’ve got no answers for that.” The team is getting use to the idea of scheduling left-handed starters in 2010, with Sunday’s matchup representing the 30th game they’ve scheduled a southpaw against the opposition. This represents a challenge against a Cardinals’ club that is 9-6 versus lefties this season (+80), but the total is 5-9-1 O/U in those games.
