NC State has found itself unable to build on the momentum of last year, which featured an upset of the Florida State Seminoles. The Wolfpack lost 49-17 to FSU this season, just one of its four consecutive losses. The team is just not that great offensively, able to muster only 23 points per game and just 14.8 per game over the last four games.
Pete Thomas has a good competition ratio (60.8 percent) but has thrown over twice as many interceptions (8) as touchdowns (3). Shadrach Thornton has rushed for 447 yards on 90 carries, but reached the end zone just four times.
College football oddsmakers at Bovada find the home team Duke to be 9-point favorites in this affair, and Duke has been pretty solid offensively this season.
The Blue Devils average 32.9 points per game and rank in the upper-half of both pass offense and rush offense, generating a total of 420 yards per game. The defense has been effective enough to result in a 6-2 record, allowing just 22.5 points per contest.
Duke has used both Brandon Connette and Anthony Boone at QB and both are pretty decent as dual threat QBs. Connette has passed for 1,069 yards and rushed for 243, while Boone has thrown for 922 and rushed for 113. Jela Duncan and Josh Snead have both done well in the backfield for Duke, as well, with 5.2 and 5.9 yard per carry averages, respectively.
NC State Trends: OVER 4-0 in last 4 vs team with winning home records; 1-6-1 ATS in last 8 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing; UNDER 5-1 in last 6 Conference games.
Duke Trends: 0-4 ATS in last 4 in NOV; OVER 4-0 in last 4 home games vs teams with losing records; OVER 6-0-1 in last 7 after accumulating less than 170 passing yards previous game.
