2010 NCAA Football Championship Odds: Teams To Avoid

Well we covered the favorites and the college football teams that we think offer some betting value to win the national title in our previous 2 pieces, so not lets take a look at the college football teams I wouldn’t want to bet on with someone elses money, all NCAA football odds current at the time of publish.

Stay away

Oklahoma Sooners (+1575)

Sophomore quarterback Landry Jones had a promising year with 26 touchdown passes in 2009. However, he threw 14 interceptions and needs to show that he can cut back on the turnovers and lead the team. The offensive line has seen a major overhaul and needs to prove itself.

There are question marks at wide receiver, where Mossis Madu and Jaz Reynolds have gotten more attention because of their drops than because of game-breaking plays. The defense lost both corners and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

I can see the Sooners field a strong team again in 2011, but they will most likely have an off year in 2010. Stay away – especially +1575

Virginia Tech Hokies (+2040)

Not a bad team, but not a good pick at +2040 either. The team will most likely find itself in the same position as every year, scrapping for the conference title without a legitimate shot at the title. Their bid for a BCS Championship game could be over before the season really starts, if they lose to Boise State.

The Hokies return all but four starters on offense, and senior quarterback Tyrod Taylor will hope to build on a good season. Virginia Tech’s big problem will be its defense. The Hokies lose three of four starting defensive linemen as well as their top backup defensive tackle.

On top of that, they lose outside linebacker Cody Grimm and four more defensive starters. Grimm will be sorely missed in run defense, and neither of the replacement options (Jeron Gouveia-Winslow and Alonzo Tweedy) has seen significant playing time. There are just too many holes in the VT defense to justify taking them at +2040.

Oregon Ducks (+3219)

Even at these odds, the Ducks are a team to stay away from. Jeremiah Masoli got himself kicked off the team after another run-in with the law. Star running back LaMichael James pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor harassment charge in March and will miss the season opener.

The Ducks overcame similar trouble last season, but the continuing problems don’t shed a good light on the coaching staff. I wouldn’t put it past the team to run into more trouble that will disrupt the Ducks’ season. Masoli’s likely replacement Nate Costa is injury prone, and Darron Thomas – the other option at QB – has an inconsistent arm.
