2005 Colorado Avalanche Hockey Season Preview

The Avalanche are about to get back on the ice and that means there should be a whole lot of goals being scored and a whole lot of pucks being stopped. The Colorado skaters averaged just under 3 goals a game in 2003-04, while their star goaltender, David Aebischer, averaged 2.09 GA. That kind of math always equals a lot of wins.

The scorers and goal generators both on offense and defense are back. Center Joe Sakic (87 PTS), wingers Alex Tanguay (79 PTS) and Milan Hejduk (75 PTS), and defenseman Rob Blake (46 PTS) create a potent force on the ice. Along with possessing a competitive toughness, each player has been amazingly durable, which is always a big plus in a grinding, hard-hitting 82-game season.

Although winger Paul Kariya will not be a member of the home team, he’s singing a new tune with the Nashville Predators, Colorado has filled that gap and more by signing former Minnesota playmaker Andrew Brunette. In three years with the Wild, Brunette averaged 81.6 games, 18 goals, 37 assists, and 54 points. The Avalanche figure that will more than make up for the 36 points Kariya created for them in his 51 games during the last NHL season.

One question remains for Colorado. Can goalie David Aebischer have another stellar season while playing in a substantial number of games? In 2003-04 Aebischer’s .924 save percentage was especially impressive because it was the first time he appeared in more than 26 NHL contests in one season. If, like the other players on the ice, Aebischer can be durable and consistent, the Avalanche have a good chance to continue their winning ways.
