2005 Boston Bruins Hockey Season Preview

The Bruins seem to be a team that can be a major power in the league this year. The deciding factor over whether this occurs will probably be related to the performance of the Bruin youth. Specifically, Patrice Bergeron, Captain Joe Thornton, and Andrew Raycroft will be essential to the team’s success.

First there is 20 year-old center Patrice Bergeron. Two years ago Bergeron, at the age of 18, finished fifth in scoring in his first NHL season. During the lockout he joined the AHL’s Providence Bruins where he became one of the best players in the league. If he can parlay that experience into the NHL, he possesses the possibility of becoming the cream of hockey’s crop.

Team leader Joe Thornton has sharpened his skates for 8 NHL seasons. Just prior to the beginning of this year’s season, Thornton inked a 3-year deal with the Bruins. The twenty-six year-old center has a knack for making things happen, as evidenced by his 50 assists in 77 games during 2003-04.

The missing part of the puzzle, Andrew Raycroft, was signed a few days after training camp opened. Raycroft, whose sensational rookie season in 2003-04 resulted in his winning the Calder Cup and being ranked fifth overall of all NHL goalies, represents the future of the Bruins. In his initial Bruin season the athletic goalkeeper finished with 2.05 GA and a save percentage of .926!
Finally there is the 17-year veteran Brian Leetch, who signed with Boston last month. He brings experience, 996 points, and a penchant for being on award winning teams. The ten-time All Star possesses an acute defensive sense and an ability to create scoring opportunities, giving any team he’s on a decided advantage.

With everyone in place, Boston is poised to be a league leader.
