UAB opened the 2014 season and the Bill Clark era at UAB in impressive fashion last Saturday, as it came away with a 48-10 victory over the Troy Trojans as 2.5-point home underdogs, while winning the statistical battle by a 218-yard margin.  The Blazers have played 22 games against Southeastern Conference opponents, which is important to consider when making your Week 2 college football picks, but they’ve compiled a 2-20 SU record in that situation.  UAB is 1-5 ATS as road underdogs of 21.5 or more points since 2012.

The Blazers were led offensively by quarterback Cody Clements in the season opener, as the junior college transfer completed 13 of 19 passes for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  Clements also has the luxury of handing the ball off to sophomore running back Jordan Howard, who rushed for 179 yards and two scores.  UAB has played Mississippi State five times in its history—dropping the last four after capturing the first affair in 2004.

Mississippi State takes on its third straight Conference USA opponent, as it comes off a 49-0 season-opening shutout win over Southern Miss, which can’t be ignored when looking over the college football odds page.  The Bulldogs have one of the best dual-threat signal-callers in the nation in Dak Prescott, who set career highs in passing yards and touchdown passes in the last victory.  Defensively, the unit has allowed only one offensive touchdown in its last 13 quarters of action.  Mississippi State is 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS in September over the last two-plus seasons.

The Bulldogs have 12 consecutive wins over non-SEC teams at Davis Wade Stadium, while they welcomed back 83 percent of their returning lettermen from a season ago—ranking third nationally in that category.  Mississippi State has put together some dominating performances recently—mainly due to the stop unit forcing 17 turnovers in its last six games of action.

Sports bettors will likely back the Bulldogs due to their 15-1 SU and 11-5 ATS mark as favorites the last two-plus seasons.
