The Horizon League championship gets underway on Tuesday with 3 games. Top seeded Wright State and media darling Butler enter the tournament as the favorites as well as regular season co-champions posting 13-3 records in conference play. A few shakeups in this weeks Maddux Sports Mid Major poll. Texas A&M Corpus Christi (Southland) dropped out of the rankings after losing to Lamar by 1 on the road. Oral Roberts (Mid-Con) was hanging on by a thread last week after losing to Utah State at home, and with the road loss to Oakland on Saturday, the Golden Eagles are no longer ranked. New Entires into this weeks mid major poll include Western Kentucky & Vermont.

The AP Top 25 Poll has the Wisconsin Badgers (12- 2 Big Ten, 26- 3 overall) ranked number one and the Ohio State Buckeyes (13- 1 Big Ten, 25- 3 overall) ranked number two. The ESPN/USA Today Poll has the Buckeyes as the top team in the nation and the Badgers at number two. So who’s right? Tonight by around 6:30 pm ET we should know. It’s big doings in the Big East as the two clubs that are tied for first place, the Pittsburg Panthers (11-2 Big East, 24- 4 overall) and the Georgetown Hoyas (11- 2 Big East, 21- 5 overall) meet at 2 pm today. The Texas Longhorns (10- 3 Big 12, 20- 7 overall) are rated 19th in the AP Coaches Poll and 20th in the ESPN/USA Poll and are in third place in their conference, Number six Kansas (11- 2 Big 12, 24- 4 overall) and number eight Texas A&M (11-2 Big 12, 23- 4 overall) are just ahead of the Longhorns. With the NBA trade deadline coming to a close today at 3:00 eastern and pretty much being a bust due to no big moves happening, no better time than now to announce this weeks Top 25 Mid Major Poll that we released to readers on Monday. For those of you that haven’t followed the Maddux Sports mid major poll before it spotlights underrated teams from conferences that don’t get a lot of pub from the media. Do to the growing interest of the Maddux Sports mid major poll, instead of releasing the weekly rankings through other means, we have now decided to strictly post the top 25 mid major basketball teams on our blog each week.

The Michigan State Spartans (7- 6 Big Ten, 20- 8 overall) knocked off the AP-Coaches’ Poll number one team and the ESPN-USA Poll number two team—the Wisconsin Badgers (12- 2 Big Ten, 26- 3 overall) —last night. At home, the Spartans took over the game in the second half and won by a nine-point margin—64- 55.  In turn boasting their tournament resume, capping off a another winning college basketball pick for maddux’s premium members, as well as grabbing some momentum for the Big 10 Tournament, which is on the horizon. The Louisville Cardinals (9-4 Big East, 19- 8 overall) and Vanderbilt Commodores (8- 4 SEC- East, 24- 3 overall) are nationally ranked at twenty and seventeen respectively. The Cards are in third-place in the Big East and Vandy is in second in the SEC-East. The big deal for Louisville is that they beat both Pittsburgh (11-2 Big East, 24- 4 overall) and Marquette (9- 5 Big East, 22- 7 overall) in one week and for Vanderbilt is that over the weeks they have knocked off numerous top-25 clubs, including the then number one Florida Gators. The unranked Vanderbilt Commodores (8-4 SEC/E, 18- 8 overall) moved into sole possession of second place in the SEC East by beating the number one ranked and SEC, East first-place Florida Gators (11- 1 SEC/E, 24- 3 overall). The 2006- 07 National Championship Gators were undefeated in the SEC until Vandy beat them easily 83- 70. The Commodores went into the locker room at halftime with a 35- 27 lead. Florida had been on a 17-game win streak until Vandy vanquished them.

The Louisville Cardinals (9- 4 Big East, 19- 8 overall) beat the 13th ranked Marquette Eagles (8- 5 Big East, 21- 7 overall) on a Jerry Smith three-point jumper as time expired, making the final score 61- 59. It’s the second time in one week that the Cards beat a nationally ranked team and a division opponent. Five days ago Louisville defeated the fifth ranked Pittsburgh Panthers.
