Week 2 NCAA Football Picks: Vanderbilt Commodores at Purdue Boilermakers

Big South Tournament

Vanderbilt at Purdue

Time: 11 AM CST

Spread: PUR -7

Total: 55.5

Odds c/o 5dimes

Vanderbilt’s early-season schedule is unforgiving. After opening Week 1 with its 6-30 loss to Georgia, it takes on Purdue as 7-point underdogs in Week 2. Week 3 sees it host No. 6 LSU. An 0-3 start is something Vandy seeks to avoid hopefully, and its best chance at securing an early-season ‘W’ is this week as a full TD underdog. The over/under is set at 55.5 points according to NCAA football oddsmakers at 5dimes, and the game will kick off 11 AM CST Saturday on the Big Ten Network.

VANDY

Vanderbilt certainly has its problems with No. 3 Georgia in Week 1. Despite a solid 14 of 25 passing performance from Riley Neal, he managed just 3.4 yards-per-completion en route to just 85 yards on the game. Deuce Wallace threw 2 of 6 for another 24 yards. Ke’Shaun Vaughn had a good game out of the backfield with 74 yards on 15 rushes, but no Vandy players reached the end zone. The scoring came in form of two field goals by place kicker Ryley Guay who knocked down 2 of 2 including a long of 46-yards. Georgia’s backfield battered the Commodores for 323 rushing yards and two rushing TDs, and Jake Fromm threw for another 156 yards on the game. Vanderbilt was not expected to hang with Georgia, but it trailed 14-0 after the first quarter and 23-6 at the half.

Neal is now in his senior season and he threw for 1,917 yards with 11 TDs and four interceptions last year while posting a 114.4 passer rating. Neal had a 57.9 percent completion percentage, which was down from his impressive 2016 when he threw for 2,541 yards at a 61.4 percent clip. His freshman season was a 2,276-yard campaign with a 58.3 percent mark.

PURDUE

Purdue lost 31-34 to Nevada in Week 1. Elijah Singular threw 34 of 52 for 423 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Sindelar ran another seven times for 26 yards. Purdue gained just 96 yards via the rush with Zander Horvath rushing for 66 on 19 attempts with a long-rush of 13-yards. Purdue’s top receivers were Rondale Moore and Brycen Hopkins. Moore had 124 yards on 11 catches with a TD, and Hopkins added another 84 yards on six catches with a TD.

David Bell and Jackson Anthrop each caught 49-yard and 38-yard TD passes as well. Purdue averaged 12.4 yards-per-catch on its 34 receptions, and it was a good start for the team but it had just as much trouble defensively, unfortunately. Purdue surrendered 295 yards to Charlie Strong including three TD passes and zero picks, while the Nevada Wolfpack rushed for another 109 yards on its 25 carries. Purdue led 24-7 at the half, but it scored just one touchdown in the second half while surrendering 27-points to Nevada.
