The Braves lead in the NL East is now just 2.5 games as they host the struggling Mets at Turner Field.

New York Mets at Atlanta Braves

New York has dropped 15 of its last 21 games, including a 14-1 blowout loss to the last-place Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.  “It definitely hurts your pride a little bit when you perform in that manner,” manager Jerry Manuel said.  “We didn’t pitch, we didn’t hit, we didn’t play defense.”  The Mets now head to a field where they’ve dropped 15 of their last 20 meetings.  The team has taken five of the first eight meetings between the two clubs, but they’ve yet to win a season series over the Braves since the 2006 season.  Offensively, the club is hitting just .210 with 54 runs scored and 15 home runs in 17 games since the All-Star break.  New York is 19-20 against divisional opponents this season (-350) and the total is 16-22 O/U in those contests.  The Mets will try to avoid dropping to the .500 mark for the first time since June 2, when the team stood at 27-27.

The Braves offense has been piling up hits at a rapid pace and faces a struggling pitcher in tonight’s contest.

Tampa Bay Rays at Atlanta Braves

Tampa Bay had spent 52 consecutive days in first place in the AL East, but the Rays have shared the top spot with the Yankees the past three days.  The team has held the majors best record for a total of 59 games this season, 19 more than their first 12 years combined.  The offense has been scuffling since May 21, scoring two runs or fewer in a game nine times.  Manager Joe Maddon summed it up after his club dropped Game Two of the series, “The good thing is we won on Tuesday night and lost today, let’s try and win the series on Thursday.”  Tampa is still a dominating 23-9 on the road this season and has outscored opponents 188-110 away from Tropicana Field.

The NL East standings has a new look, as both of tonight’s teams are heading in opposite directions.

Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves

Philadelphia was knocked out of first place in the National League East for the first time since May 1, after Monday’s 9-3 loss to Atlanta at Turner Field.  “We seem to go through down periods the last couple of years at the end of May and Interleague in June,” said closer Brad Lidge.  The Phillies have lost seven of their last nine games and enters Tuesday having scored just 10 runs over that span (-677). This is vastly different from a team that started the month with an NL-best 12-3 record.  Philadelphia finds itself as an underdog for the third straight games, as the team is a dominating 31-19 the last three years as a road underdog of +100 to +125 (+1,560).
