Chicago Bears Football Team
The Bears defense staying healthy is a major key to success in 2010
The Chicago Bears will likely put up more impressive numbers with the addition of new offensive coordinator Mike Martz, but they will need a much better defensive effort this season in order to be a real force in the NFC.  The signing of All-Pro DE Julius Peppers should help the Bears pressure the top quarterbacks in the division like Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers if he is motivated enough to prove himself as one of the NFL’s best defensive players.  If not, the Windy City will blow head coach Lovie Smith out of town following another disappointing year.

Matt Ryan Atlanta Falcons
The Betting Public Is Expecting Big Things From the Falcons in 2010
The Atlanta Falcons could very well have the best blend of youth and experience in the NFL led by third-year QB Matt Ryan, who regressed a bit in his sophomore season.  Ryan still managed to help the Falcons post their first back-to-back winning seasons in franchise history even though they did not get back to the playoffs.  This year, anything less than a return to the postseason will be disappointing, especially with future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez playing on borrowed time.

Could This Finally Be The Year the Houston Texans Takes The Next Step?
The Houston Texans had the top QB-WR tandem in the NFL statistically last season with Matt Schaub (4,770 yards passing) and Andre Johnson (1,569 yards receiving).  Unfortunately, the Texans did not even have a 500-yard rusher on the roster, otherwise they likely would have been a playoff team.  With a respectable young defense that keeps getting better, the running game could again hold the key to whether or not Houston makes its first-ever trip to the postseason.

Carson Palmer Cincinnati Bengals
Our offense is going to be much better with my new weapons
The Cincinnati Bengals will be more exciting this season thanks to the signing of WR Terrell Owens, but whether or not that will result in back-to-back playoff appearances remains to be seen.  The Bengals will have a very difficult time duplicating last year’s perfect 6-0 record in the AFC North, but the good news is that the Pittsburgh Steelers will be without starting QB Ben Roethlisberger for up to six games.  The bad news is Roethlisberger will still play them twice.

dallas cowboys football teamThere is no denying the talent of the Dallas Cowboys, but do they have leadership and coaching to take the next step and get to the Super Bowl?  That is highly debatable, especially considering that rookie WR Dez Bryant is already having issues with authority in training camp.  If nobody steps up to assume more responsibility and lead the Cowboys, not even a favorable schedule will translate to more success than last year and save Wade Phillips’ job following this season.

Once Again I Put the Pittsburgh Steelers in a Tough Position
The biggest question surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers this season obviously revolves around how they will play early on during QB Ben Roethlisberger’s six-game suspension.  Even though there is a chance that Roethlisberger’s suspension could get reduced to four games, Pittsburgh will ultimately need to decide whether veteran Byron Leftwich or youngster Dennis Dixon will take the reins heading into the season and navigate the team through the first part of the schedule.

The San Francisco 49ers have been a popular darkhorse pick the last couple years, but it’s put up or shut up time now for head coach Mike Singletary’s squad.  Singletary has anointed Alex Smith the unquestioned starter at QB this season, and he already has the second-most snaps under center in the division behind Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck.  With Arizona’s Kurt Warner retired, this seems to finally be the year for the 49ers to strike gold and return to the playoffs.

Aaron Rodgers Green Bay PackersThe Green Bay Packers showed a lot of promise last season under the leadership of second-year starting QB Aaron Rodgers on their way to an impressive 11-5 record and playoff berth.  Unfortunately, it was their former QB Brett Favre who kept them from winning the NFC North and will lead the defending division champs if he decides to come back yet again this year.  Favre’s Minnesota Vikings are expected to be the only major divisional roadblock for the Packers, who are +125 to win the NFC North, 6/1 to win the NFC and 12/1 to win Super Bowl XLV.

2010 San Diego Chargers
Darren Sproles Leads the Chargers High Powered Offense
Despite a surprisingly disappointing start and finish to the 2009-10 NFL season, the San Diego Chargers still find themselves with plenty to look forward to this year as one of the top favorites at 10/1 to win Super Bowl XLV in Dallas.  The defending AFC West champion Chargers closed out the LaDainian Tomlinson era with a tough 17-14 divisional playoff loss at home to the New York Jets back on January 17 following 11 straight regular-season wins.

We are currently in the closest thing to an offseason that the NFL has these days. Players are working out and coaches are scheming, but for the rookies have been drafted, and most of the significant free agents have new homes. We have the best sense we’ve had yet of what teams are going to look like next year, so it only makes sense that this is a good time to look at the Super Bowl futures that are available to see what is interesting. There are three teams that stand out to me as being lousy bets, and three more that are at least a little interesting that their current prices (all odds are from Bodog):
