With Bodog closing their future’s betting for the season, we are left with Sportsbook as our new provider of future’s bets, for this preview and the remaining NL West preview.  We’ll take a look here at the most wide open division in baseball.  All three of the top teams have legitimate division crown hopes, and the bottom three teams offer the greatest host of teams that have no chance of making any waves of any sort at all.

The first-place Reds are in position to win another series as they play the final game of a three-game set at PNC Park.

Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates

Cincinnati fell 7-6 in the second game of this three-game set against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, but the club has still won five of its last eight games.  It’s also important to note that the Reds are 9-1-1 in their previous 11 series, including 4-0-1 in their first five series of the second half.  The team hasn’t made the playoffs since 1995 and haven’t finished above .500 since 2000, currently features the NL’s top lineup and best defense.  “This is why I came here, for this point and purpose,” manager Dusty Baker said.  All-Star first baseman Joey Votto didn’t start for a second straight game on Tuesday with a sprained wrist.  Cincinnati is a dominating 30-17 against division opponents this season and the total is 21-22 O/U in those games.  In 36 day games, the Reds have compiled an even 18-18 mark and the total is 10-21 O/U.

He made his last minor league appearance on Thursday afternoon, and barring anything unforeseen he is scheduled to join the Nationals for his first start on June 8 at home against the Pirates. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Strasburg is the most eagerly anticipated debuting pitcher in league history. Other pitchers have perhaps been as hyped, and have certainly been as talented, but the age of the internet has whipped up more of a frenzy around this one than was possible before. Strasburg’s every move has been followed since well before he was drafted, and highlights of all his minor league starts have been widely available for everyone to see. As we get ready for the arrival of the next great thing here are eight random things that are on my mind about the pitcher and the situation surrounding him:

A scheduled off-day for both teams has turned into a Monday afternoon contest due to a rainout on Wednesday.

Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates

Chicago is playing its ninth game (2-6) in a stretch of 12-straight against NL Central opponents that lasts through June 10.  The Cubs are currently 1-4 on its current road trip, after dropping Sunday’s contest, 6-3, in Houston to the Astros.  The defeat dropped the Cubs to a 3-23 mark when scoring three or fewer runs this season, while they are 22-7 when scoring four or more.  Chicago is slated to face a southpaw on Monday, which has been a recipe of success in the last four opportunities.  The team is actually hitting .267 overall against lefties this season, a mark that is 12 points higher than its overall season average (.255).
