The pressure is squarely placed on the Nationals offense with their young superstar on the hill.

New York Mets at Washington Nationals

New York has won two of its last three games, including a 5-3 victory on Friday night.  The Mets are 25-12 in their last 37 contests dating back to May 22, which is the second-best mark in the majors over that span (Boston).  Overall, the Mets are 17-23 (-410) on the road, but they have won two of three games away from Citi Field.  New York has scored at least one run in the first inning in its last four games, producing a 37-14 mark when scoring first.  The offense has been led by 3B David Wright’s NL-leading 63 RBI, which ranks third in the majors.  The Mets have not dropped a season series to the Nationals/Expos franchise since 2003.

The first place Braves enjoyed a well-deserved off day and now welcome the world traveling Marlins.

Florida Marlins at Atlanta Braves

Florida dropped a 6-5 decision to the New York Mets in a series finale that was played in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  The club is still adjusting to the guidance of new skipper Edwin Rodriguez, after the club dismissed Fredi Gonzalez in late June.  After taking two of three against the Mets in a series where they were designated the home team, the Marlins head off on a 10-game road trip.  Florida has won five of its last seven games away from Sun Life Stadium and should remain confident in playing at Turner Field.  The squad posted a 6-3 mark on the Braves home field last season.  Over the last three years, the Fish have posted a 98-75 mark against NL East opponents (+3,010).

The NL East standings has a new look, as both of tonight’s teams are heading in opposite directions.

Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves

Philadelphia was knocked out of first place in the National League East for the first time since May 1, after Monday’s 9-3 loss to Atlanta at Turner Field.  “We seem to go through down periods the last couple of years at the end of May and Interleague in June,” said closer Brad Lidge.  The Phillies have lost seven of their last nine games and enters Tuesday having scored just 10 runs over that span (-677). This is vastly different from a team that started the month with an NL-best 12-3 record.  Philadelphia finds itself as an underdog for the third straight games, as the team is a dominating 31-19 the last three years as a road underdog of +100 to +125 (+1,560).
