The Richmond Spiders are 9-1 ATS as a home favorite

Saint Joseph’s will be playing its first game away from the Philadelphia area since Jan. 18, with the program looking to win just its fourth game of the new calendar year.  The Hawks were handed a 78-60 loss to the Temple Owls as six-point road underdogs last time out.  “Today to prepare for Richmond,” Hawks coach Phil Martelli stated this week.  “We put up the Atlantic 10 standings.”  Both teams are 3-4 in the league after the first month of conference play.  Saint Joseph’s is 6-3 ATS as an underdog and the “over” is 6-3 in that situation.

The Hawks have four players averaging double figures in scoring, with guard Carl Jones leading the way in pouring in 16.1 points per game.  Saint Joseph’s has lost three in a row in this series, including a 62-52 defeat as 12.5-point road underdogs on this court on Feb. 2, 2011.  The program is 9-1 at home this season, but have tallied a dismal 2-7 mark on the road.

Richmond is 8-2 at home this season and 37-6 in its last 43 contests inside the Robins Center.  The Spiders have also experienced some trouble recently, dropping three of their last four games, including a listless 62-47 defeat against Saint Bonaventure as six-point road underdogs on Saturday.  Head coach Chris Mooney certainly didn’t enjoy breaking down that contest, as the offense shot just 26.5 percent from the field.  “Of course, you’re always concerned,” he stated this week in practice.  “It was more a matter we really didn’t convert any shots.”  Richmond is 3-0 ATS as a home favorite of three points or less the last two-plus years.

The Spiders definitely take care of the basketball, averaging just 10.8 turnovers per game, which lead the Atlantic 10 and ranks 13th nationally.  Junior guard Darien Brothers is the player to watch on the offensive end, leading the team in scoring 14.5 points per game, while averaging 18 points over the last 13 games.  Richmond will definitely make some noise by the end of this month, posting a 12-2 record in February the past two seasons.

Bettors will likely back the Spiders due to their 9-1 ATS mark as a home favorite, while the Hawks are 4-10 ATS as a road underdog of 6.5 points or less.
