It seems like the dust may finally be settling on NCAA re-alignment. Armageddon didn’t arrive to the extent it could have, but there is still a different landscape for next year. Three conferences added teams and three lost teams in a widespread shuffle driven almost entirely by money. There may still be a move or two, but where we are at right now is a logical stopping point, so hopefully things will stop for at least a while.

The 2010 College World Series will mark the last time the event will be held at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha. For 61 years the ballpark was the site of college baseball’s biggest stage. The NCAA Tournament, for years dubbed the “Road to Omaha”, will need a new name next season.

The third chapter of the truly captivating Stephen Strasburg story will be written on Friday when he starts at home against Jake Peavy and the Chicago White Sox. Strasburg entered the league as perhaps the most hyped pitcher ever to debt thanks to the age of the internet. He’s also one of the rare prospects who has not only lived up to the dizzying expectations, but has probably exceeded them. His first start was a masterpiece like many starters in the league will never throw. The second wasn’t quite as smooth, but it was still very impressive and well above average.

The Braves offense has been piling up hits at a rapid pace and faces a struggling pitcher in tonight’s contest.

Tampa Bay Rays at Atlanta Braves

Tampa Bay had spent 52 consecutive days in first place in the AL East, but the Rays have shared the top spot with the Yankees the past three days.  The team has held the majors best record for a total of 59 games this season, 19 more than their first 12 years combined.  The offense has been scuffling since May 21, scoring two runs or fewer in a game nine times.  Manager Joe Maddon summed it up after his club dropped Game Two of the series, “The good thing is we won on Tuesday night and lost today, let’s try and win the series on Thursday.”  Tampa is still a dominating 23-9 on the road this season and has outscored opponents 188-110 away from Tropicana Field.

If you’re looking for an angle that can give you an edge when betting on baseball – and who isn’t? – then you should take a look at the overweight older man behind the plate. The home plate umpire has more control on a game than anyone else on the field, and they often establish trends that can be exploited. Umpires have been on our minds a lot these days thanks to the imperfect game a couple of weeks back, so this is a chance for us to get a little something back from the umps that stole that piece of history.

Two of the league’s best fireballers take to the mound at Target Field in the series finale.

Colorado Rockies at Minnesota Twins

Colorado has dropped two straight games and eight of 13 to fall five games behind in the NL West, while also falling to an even 23-23 against right-handed pitchers.  “If I had an answer, I’d be much more definitive, but I don’t,” manager Jim Tracy said.  “But I can tell you there is an element of frustration because we’re a club that is still playing baseball a game over .500.”  Despite last night’s 2-1 defeat, the Rockies have the best winning percentage in interleague play among National League teams since 2006.  Colorado fanned 12 times against Minnesota SP Scott Baker, as they rank fifth in the NL in strikeouts.  A bigger problem is a .215 team batting average with 59 strikeouts with two out and runners in scoring position.

Ladies and Gentleman, we have a Game 7. And here is the kicker: this will be the first for Phil Jackson to coach a Game 7 in an NBA Finals series. That’s right. The guy, who has won 10 NBA titles as a coach, never had to go to a Game 7 to win the Championship. In fact, he has never been part of a Finals Game 7 in his coaching or playing career.
