For the 3-9 Tennessee Titans, it is now seeing just how far it can best its 2-win season in 2014-15. Tennessee won just two games a year ago, and it has a chance to demonstrate a bigger improvement by knocking off a 7-5 New York Jets team that is very much playing for the playoffs. The Jets are 7.5-point favorites in the game and the over/under is 43.5 according to oddsmaker Pincle.

The Jets are aiming to win its third straight game, something the team has not done in four years. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brandon Marshall look like the tandem to make that happen, and the Jets are currently tied atop the AFC wild-card chase with Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs.

Fitzpatrick has thrown 22 TDs this season and Marshall has caught 10 of those, six having come in the last five games. Marshall has 1,000 receiving yards for the eighth time in his 10 year career and he has 83 receptions on the year. If he catches 17 more, it will mark the sixth season in which the talented WR has caught 100 passes or more.

Last week Marshall and Fitzpatrick completed 12 receptions including a nine-yard TD pass with 27 seconds to go that forced OT. Randy Bullock won the game for New York on a field goal as the Jets won 23-20 over the New York Giants. Fitzpatrick threw for 390 yards on 72 percent passing clip, and Marshall had 131 yards in the game.

Fitzpatrick, Marshall and WR Eric Decker have thrived as a trio, and Decker had 101 yards on eight catches last week. Both credit Fitzpatrick for his great communication with his wide outs, and said that he does it both on and off the field, which has led to a good sense of camaraderie for the Jets.

The Titans have been a good offensive team at times, which will test New York. Tennessee is hoping to have Darrelle Davis back in the lineup. He missed two games with a concussion, but he practiced on Friday and is listed as probable. HC Mike Mularkey said “The plan is he’s playing and we’re prepping for that. We have to understand his ability and what he brings to the defense.”

The Jets are a good defensive team, overall. It has allowed a league-best 83.5 yards per game to the rush, while giving up just 43.0 yards per game over its past two contests. The team also averages 3.4 sacks per game over its past five games. Marcus Mariota is lightning quick, but it has not made a huge difference with the Titans having a rather mediocre line that has allowed 10 sacks the last three weeks while Mariota has 30 on the year.

Mariota has had three TD passes in each of the Titans’ last two games and he has 19 on the season. He could best Steve McNair’s 24 in 2003, which would be a big step for the rookie. He threw 20 of 29 last week for 268 yards while rushing for an additional 112 yards. He had an 87-yard jaunt on the go-ahead TD run when the Titans defeated Jacksonville 42-39.

“The guy is fast,” said TE Delanie Walker, “I think he is just going to get better, especially next year when he is all settled in and understands the philosophy of the offense.” That’s a high billing for a player who has already started to change the culture in Nashville.

The Titans appear on the field as though they believe they can win games, which was certainly not the case last year for the team. Walker has caught 67 passes this year for 800 yards which is just 90 short of his mark last year. He has the experience to put a good gauge on Mariota, and it is not just empty teammate pumping. He has caught 22 passes for 292 yards just the last three weeks. Dorial Green-Beckham also looks to be a great talent to grow with him as a fellow rookie who caught five passes for 119 yards last week.

The Jets have a strong secondary and it will test Tennessee’s pass-heavy offense. Mariota said though that “Any athlete will tell you that they want to play and compete against the best, if we get that opportunity on Sunday I’ll do my best to make plays and win the game.” Though the Titans are 7.5 point dogs, it is not inconceivable that the team scores a big win over a Jets team still trying to secure that wild card spot. Tennessee will certainly not roll over.
