8-2 Georgia Southern has gone 7-0 against Sun Belt competition this year and will take on Independent Navy this week. The Midshipmen are 4-5 and will enter the game as 3-point favorites against the Eagles.
Georgia Southern boasts the highest yardage rush offense in the NCAA, with 386.5 yards per game coming on the ground. It’s helped the Eagles obliterate its soft schedule, and both losses Georgia Southern encountered came against in-state ACC schools NC State and Georgia Tech. Sandwiched between those heartbreaking close games was an 83-9 trouncing of Savannah State.
Again due to its soft schedule, the Eagles average 42.8 points per game which is the 8th highest in the country. Given that Navy has a soft defense, the potential is there for a very high scoring game. College football odds indicate the total is 62 at Bovada, but bettors may choose the over since Navy surrenders 30 points per game on average. Over the last three weeks, the Midshipmen have been better defensively, but last week gave up 49 points to Notre Dame.
It’s strange to think of this as the matchup of the top two rush offenses in the NCAA, but Navy ranks behind only Georgia Southern in rushing yardage. The Midshipmen of course can thank mostly Keenan Reynolds for this. He’s thrown for 636 yards and rushed for 686, while RBs Noah Copeland and Chris Swain have each had success too. Copeland averages 8.7 yards per carry. Reynolds though has accounted for 11 TDs while Swain and Copeland combine for just six.
At WR, there is only one Midshipmen with double-digit catches, Jamir Tillman. He’s caught 17 passes for 324 yards, but when called upon makes plays. His 67-yard TD reception and 19.1 yard per reception average are fully indicative of this.
