As has been a general theme in this series, the Raptors used its superior depth and a defensive clinic from Jonas Valanciunas to win Game 5. Toronto’s starting center was just 5 of 13 from the field for 14 points, but he was everywhere on the boards and defensively, finishing with 13 rebounds, a steal and a block— and most notably a +19 mark for his 32 minutes of court time, the best of any Raptors’ starter. Meanwhile, DeMar DeRozan gave Toronto the offensive push scoring 32 points on 12 of 24 shooting and dishing out five assists.

Kyle Lowry was 7 of 13 from the field for 17 points and 10 assists, and the Raptors closed the game with a 29-20 fourth quarter to walk away from Game 5 victors.

For Washington, the theme was once again one of not having enough depth. The Wizards bench shot just 8 of 23 from the field. Kelly Oubre Jr was just 3 of 11 while finishing -9 for his 26 minutes of court time. The lack of production from the second unit once again negated strong starts by both Bradley Beal and John Wall, who combined to hit 18 of 41 from the field while amassing 46 combined points.

The problem is that outside of that pairing the Wizards knocked down just 19 of 49 from the field and turned the ball over 15 times while the Raptors committed just 10.

Washington even held a +15 advantage on the glass, but it was not enough with the team shooting 41 percent from the floor and under 40 percent outside of the Wall/Beal tandem. Toronto also connected on 11 threes while Washington was just 5 of 26 from being the arc. There is no real recipe for Wizards’ series victory given Toronto’s outstanding depth, and Delon Wright was huge off the Raptors bench, too, with 18 points and five rebounds in 26 minutes. With Wright outplaying Oubre so badly in the second unit, there is no way Wall and Beal can take advantage of their slight edge on Lowry and DeRozan.
