The Phillies are enjoying a red-hot August despite having major stars on the disabled list.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Philadelphia Phillies

Los Angeles has lost nine of its last 10 road games and is suffering through a five-game losing streak away from Dodger Stadium.  In those five games, the offense is managing to average just 1.8 runs and hit for a .156 combined average.  The club hopes to build off of an eight-run outburst in the homestand finale against the Nationals.  “Today was a good day,” manager Joe Torre said about Sunday’s output.  “But we need more contributions from the guys in the middle.  The Dodgers are in the middle of a 10-game stretch against opponents from the National League East (2-1) and have posted a 10-13 record against the division this season.  Los Angeles if 5-4 this month (-100) and 32-35 in August over the last three seasons (-1,580).  The Blue Crew has compiled a solid 8-4 record on the road with a money line of -100 to -125 (+360), which differs greatly from the 22-30 mark the last three years in this situation (-1,160).

carolina panthers footballThe Carolina Panthers will be going through a transition phase this season after losing two of their most notable players over the last decade.  Gone are former starting QB Jake Delhomme (Cleveland Browns) and DE Julius Peppers (Chicago Bears) from a team that played in Super Bowl XXXVIII a little less than seven years ago.  Carolina head coach John Fox remains to try to re-build around the NFL’s third-best running game, led by two returning 1,000-yard rushers in Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams.  To help their chances against the NFL spreads, Fox will turn to third-year QB Matt Moore to replace Delhomme while rookie Jimmy Clausen learns behind him.  Because Stewart and Williams can dominate by running the ball, Moore will not have a lot of pressure on him right away.  But that could change down the line if the Panthers struggle and with Clausen breathing down his neck.

After a 2009 season in which the Bears went 7-9 with a -48 point differential, the 2010 Regular season win total has been set at 8. It seems like Vegas has set this number properly because they are getting roughly the same amount on both sides. Bodog has the over at -120 while Bookmaker has the under at -120. A bookmaker’s dream because he’ll collect his vig without risk but a tough call for a bettor. The Bookbeater would play the under if he had to but would likely pass.

After a 2009 season in which the Bengals went 10-6 with a +14 point differential, Vegas has set the 2010 Regular season win total at 8.  The bookmakers seem to be getting roughly the same amount of early betting on the over -110 on Bodog and the under -114 on Pinnacle.   The 2009 season was a pleasant surprise for Bengal fans in that they won the AFC North.  The offense was 24th in the NFL while the defense was 4th.  Defensive guru Marvin Lewis finally got the Bengals to stop teams and the emergence of RB Cedric Benson added toughness to the offense.  While the Bengals had a strong off-season the brutal schedule has the Bookbeater thinking under.

St Louis Rams Football
Jackson is one of the fewest positives the Rams have going this year
The St. Louis Rams will have an opportunity to turn things around in 2010 thanks to a favorable early-season schedule that includes six of their first eight games against teams that did not make the playoffs a year ago.  The Rams will need more help than that though in order win more than five games, starting with the development of rookie QB Sam Bradford.  The first step will be keeping franchise RB Steven Jackson healthy after he has missed nine games combined over the last three seasons.  Jackson only missed one game last season but also tied his career low with four touchdowns and will need to make a bigger impact offensively in order to take some pressure off Bradford and veteran QB A.J. Feeley, who might open the season as the starter which could impact the NFL football odds.

The Rays look to snap a season-high losing streak and turn to their All-Star left-hander in hopes of doing so.

Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers

Tampa Bay was nearly no-hit in a 1-0 road loss to the Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon and have managed to hit for a combined .149 average in dropping five straight games.  This recent skid is the club’s longest losing streak of the season, after the team had gone 10-1 in their previous 11 games.  “I was beginning to think no-hitters were commonplace,” said third baseman Evan Longoria.  “It seems like we’ve been a part of and watched so many this year.”  Rays outfielder Carl Crawford returned to the lineup yesterday after two days of rest, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.  Tampa is 7-3 in Monday games this season (+340) and 27-19 on this day the past three years (+620).  The Rays are also a dominating 34-17 against teams with losing records in 2010 (+410).

Bill Stewart may be a nice guy, but he cant coach a lick
With Charlie Weis no longer at Notre Dame it’s no longer quite as easy to spot the worst coach in major college football. If there were an award for the dubious distinction of being less of a coach than everyone else who paces the college football sidelines it would be called the Marvin Lewis Trophy in honor of the Cincinnati Bengals’ coach who is unquestionably the worst coach in all of football. If that award existed then these four guys would be this year’s preseason favorites:

Buffalo Bills FootballThe Buffalo Bills look to move past the Terrell Owens circus from a year ago and regain some kind of offensive identity under new head coach Chan Gailey.  The Bills saw 11 different players start on the offensive line last year while three different quarterbacks took snaps and two different running backs were featured.  these contributed to the Bills not doing well against the NFL football point spread.  Gailey has already tabbed Trent Edwards as the team’s starting QB heading into this season, and rookie RB C.J. Spiller finally made it to practice after he avoided becoming the last first-round pick to sign his contract.  Spiller figures to be an integral part of the offense once he gets familiar with the playbook and hopes to become the team’s most exciting running back since Thurman Thomas.  There will be several more position battles throughout training camp for a team that finished just 6-10 last season, but that should only help the team bond under Gailey and become a tighter unit by the time the regular season begins.

The Red Sox are hoping to earn a split in this four-game series and see their talented left-hander bounce back from a bad stretch.

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

Boston will try to salvage a split in this four-game series after dropping the last two contests, including a 7-2 defeat last night on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.  “This was a huge opportunity for us, trying to gain ground on these guys and Tampa Bay,” said third baseman Adrian Beltre.  “But unfortunately it didn’t work out the way we wanted.”  The Red Sox are now seven games back of the Yankees and 4.5 away in the Wild Card race.  The club is now an even 4-4 this month (-340) and 38-25 in August the last three years (+780).  Boston has also slipped up against divisional foes in 2010, posting a 21-22 record (-530), with the total being 24-17 O/U in those games.  The banged up ball  club did receive some encouraging news over the weekend, as second baseman Dustin Pedroia (left foot) has plans of returning to the lineup on August 17
