This weekend all fans are treated to some of the best scheduled games in recent memory, including a Michigan/Notre Dame showdown. These 2 teams first squared off in 1887, making this one of the oldest rivalries in NCAA football, and one of the most anticipated games this season.

Saturday the Michigan Wolverines and their 13th ranked football team travel to South Bend Indiana to play against the number 2 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the 34th chapter of their historical rivalry. Since its inception, the Wolverines have an 18-14 straight-up advantage (1 tie), but the Irish have had the best of Michigan lately winning 3 of the last 4 games. The Irish have been particularly good against the point spread in recent games collecting the cash in 6 of the last 7 against the number. This Saturday the bookmakers (BETCRIS) opened Notre Dame as a 7.5 favorite over the Wolverines. A couple other sportsbooks followed with this 7.5 opener and on Sunday night Maddux’s handicapping team bet all the 7.5s we could driving the number down to 6.5/7 early Monday morning.

The odds are posted for the big contest this week between the number one Buckeyes and the number two Longhorns with most handicappers making the home team 2.5-point favorites and a few making them 3-point favorites. Three-points are normally given for the home field advantage, which means this contest is seen as being about as tight as it can get.

This morning the associated press released the second set of college football rankings for the season. In a shocking surprise the Texas Longhorns and USC Trojans jumped over Notre Dame to claim the 2nd and 3rd spots respectfully. Ohio State fresh off a beating of Northern Illinois remained number 1 in the poll.

What this now means is when Ohio State and Texas square off on Saturday night, it will be the first regular season meeting between the number 1 and 2 ranked teams since 1996. This game will also be the earliest game ever played between the top two AP poll teams in the history of college football. Maddux Sports will probably be making a college football pick on this game so stay tuned to the website for more winning selections.

Michael Bush, a candidate for this year’s Heisman Trophy, carried the ball 17 times and ran for 128 yards and scored 3 TDs in his first game this season as the 13th-ranked Cardinals hammered Kentucky, 59-28. But in the third quarter Bush was tackled by Kentucky LB Wesley Woodyard, breaking his tibia and fibula and ending the top draft pick’s senior season.

The number 2 ranked Irish of Notre Dame had to fight hard to get by the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 14-10. QB Brady Quinn found himself under a lot of pressure throughout much of the game. A tough Tech defense proved that the powerful ND offense could be checked. But a slimmed down Notre Dame defense was up to the task, managing to hold off repeated forays by the Tech combo of QB Reggie Ball and WR Calvin Johnson (7 rec. 111 yds, 1 TD). ND RB Darius Walker had 99 yards on 22 carries and scored 1 TD.

While all 119 Division I teams enter the 2006 season with fresh records and on equal footing with championship desires, the linesman at Pinnacle Sportsbook believe only a small number of teams stand any realistic chance of winning the BCS Championship Game on January 8th.

In what’s definitely a shocker, the West Virginia Mountaineers are currently a +650 favorite to win the national championship mainly because of their relatively soft schedule Notre Dame is a slight underdog to capture their 14th national title at +700 odds, followed by the number 1 ranked team in the poll Ohio State at +750. Even though USC has lost the big 3 Leinart, Bush, and White, USC has been installed as a +800 underdog to win the national crown. Pinnacle must believe that even though they lost all that talent, the Trojans will not miss a beat. Rounding out the top 5 are the Florida Gators lead by quaterback Chris Leak at +1000.
