This season can already be called a victorious one in some senses for NC State. They beat then-No. 3 Florida State in the upset of the year so far, and then came back to win against Maryland the next week. Last week, they came back down to Earth against UNC, losing 43-35 to their conference rival on the road. They held a 10 point lead going into the fourth quarter, but gave up 18 points to UNC in the fourth quarter to end up with the disappointing loss.

Mike Glennon had a strong performance in the loss, though. The Senior QB has thrown for 2,455 yards on the season with 19 TDs and “only” nine interceptions. Glennon has a QB rating of 133.9 and last week threw for 467 yards. It was his third game of the season with over 300 yards in the air, and his second with 400+. Strong performances against Miami (FL) and UNC last week have shown NC State is capable of making some noise in the ACC, especially if their defense toughens up a little bit more.

They shouldn’t have as much a problem with the Virginia Cavaliers, who rank near the bottom of the nation in rush yardage, yet have a pretty good pass offense (279 yards per game). Still, their net effect is poor, as they average only 21.5 points per game. Their defense hasn’t been good enough to compensate for that shortcoming, as they give up 30.9 points per game this year, and have given up more than 40 points three times already (Georgia Tech, Louisiana Tech, and Duke).

The Cavaliers have dropped their last six straight games after impressive wins to open the season against Richmond and Penn State. They have lost all four of their ACC games and likely will lose this one too, as heavy underdogs. Things don’t get any easier, though. They’ll travel to Miami (FL) next week, and then face UNC on November 15th. It’s hard to hang their hats on a victory in week 2, but so far, the only memorable thing they have done is beating that Nittany Lions team before they started to gel and over come the scandal.
