Coach: Guy Morris (5th year at Baylor)
Team Name: Bears
2006 Overall Record: 4-8
Returning Starters: 11

In 2006, the Baylor Bears (4- 8 overall, 3- 5 Big 12), who have not been to a bowl game since 1994 when they took the Big 12 Championship, finished tied for fifth in the South division. Baylor faces a very tough schedule that includes eight teams that competed in bowls last year. Don't expect this team to be making a post-season experience.

Last year, the Bears finished 119th, last nationally, in rushing. Help will be seen with the addition of former Arizona State center J.D. Walton to the line and the return of junior tackle Jason Smith, who'll now play the left side. Additionally, offensive coordinator Lee Hays, now starting his third season, wants everyone blocking on runs, including the receivers. Senior RB Brandon Whitaker (41 CAR, 158 YDs, 1 TD) certainly wants to create more offense via the run. Ironically, he's the returning leader in receptions (30 REC, 192 YDs, 1 TD) too. Whitaker has sure hands and fine speed. The Bears return only four on offense and will most likely start a 25 year-old QB, a graduate from Kent State named Michael Machen, who is also a former minor league baseball player and has one year of eligibility left. The receivers are almost all new.

Larry Hoefer, who has been at the school for five years, starts his first season as defensive coordinator. He's Baylor's third D-coordinator in five years. The basic scheme remains the same: 4- 2- 5. The Bears gave up 32.6 PPG, ranking 110th nationally. Six return on defense, including two fine linebackers—senior Nick Moore (75 tackles, 32 solo) and sophomore Joe Pawelek (86 tackles, 46 solo), who was a Freshman All-American in 2006. The team has an unknown secondary and last season could not stop the run.

The big swing game for the Bears, against Rice, will be the difference between two and three wins. Baylor will be in the cellar of the Big 12 South.
