Coach: Pat Hill (10th year at Fresno State)
Team Name: Bulldogs
2005 Overall Record: 8-4
2005 WAC Record 6-2
Returning Starters: 14

Four successive loses, including a 24-31 Liberty Bowl beating by Tulsa, diminished the Bulldogs prior regular season success, including 13 weeks ranked in the top 25. This year the team fields two sophomore quarterbacks.

Tom Brandstater with 13 attempts, 6 completions, 0 touchdowns and 1 interception, has the most experience and will most likely get the start. Junior running back Dwayne Wright, who missed all of 2005 and most of 2004 with a knee injury, is healthy and ready to replicate his 2003 season, when he gained 1,038 yards and scored 3 TDs.

Two senior wide receivers, Joe Fernandez (46 REC, 561 YDS, 8 TDs) and Paul Williams, bring sure hands to the offensive equation. The frontline will provide sound protection.

Although the defense has lost Garrett McIntyre on the line and Richard Marshall at corner, they still have a bunch of talent and plenty of veteran presence. MLB Dwayne Andrews took down offensive players a total of 71 times, while defensive end Tyler Clutts caught quarterbacks 7 times behind the line of scrimmage. Senior CB Marcus McCauley provides excellent coverage and leadership for the secondary.

Fresno State could contend for the conference crown and should find a bowl berth. It’s possible they can beat rival Boise State. Upsets against Oregon and LSU would probably make the team perfect for the season, but that will be tough to do.
