id="caption-attachment-4515" class="wp-caption-text">New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia looms large on Tuesday night

New York opened this three-game series with a 3-0 shutout win on Monday night, but the club continues to struggle offensively with runners in scoring position. The Yankees are 19th in the majors with 186 runs scored in those situations, while hitting for a .220 batting average. Those numbers could improve in this contest, considering the club is an AL-best 12-7 against left-handed starters. New York is 4-1 as a road favorite of -150 to -175, while the “over” is 3-2 in that situation.

Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia (7-3, 3.69 ERA) will look to bounce back from a 7-3 setback at home to the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing five runs (three earned) and seven hits over seven frames. The left-hander has tallied a 4-1 record and 4.50 ERA in seven road outings, issuing 14 walks and striking out 43 batters in 48 frames. In two career games versus the Braves, Sabathia has gone 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA, including a 4-2 victory at Turner Field on Aug. 8, 2008, as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers. He is 20-8 with a 3.45 ERA in 42 career interleague starts.

Atlanta suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since May 28 in last night’s setback, dropping its record to 10-13 all-time against New York in interleague play. The Braves have still managed to win eight of their last 11 games, while outscoring opponents by a plus-28 margin on the season. Leadoff hitter Michael Bourn will need to make something happen in this contest, hitting .413 with two home runs and five RBIs over an 11-game hit streak. Atlanta is 11-11 versus southpaw starters, with the “over” going 14-8 in those contests.

Braves starting pitcher Mike Minor (3-4, 6.57 ERA) halted a personal three-game losing streak in picking up an 8-2 road victory over the Miami Marlins last time out, giving up just a single run and four hits over five frames. The left-hander has struggled with this control over the last four games, issuing 14 walks over just 20.2 innings of work over that span. In four home starts this year, Minor has tallied a 1-2 record and 6.56 ERA, which is far different than his 3-1 mark and 3.10 ERA in seven appearances in that situation in 2011.

Bettors will likely back the Yankees due to their 18-3 mark in Sabathia’s last 21 starts as a road favorite of -151 to -200, while the Braves are 0-6 in their last six home games against left-handed starters.

Make sure to check out our Major League Baseball picks all
