The rushing title is his to lose again this year, and I don’t bet that he will unless he gets injured. There are a bunch of other strong running backs out there who could pick up the slack if Peterson falters. Here are five at the top of my list:

1. Matt Forte – Forte was the best rookie running back in the league last year, and there is a very good chance that he’ll be better this year. The Bears finally actually have a passing game, so that will open up more room for Forte to do what he does so well. Forte also gets to run behind Orlando Pace this year. That’s an upgrade, and yet another ingredient in what could be a very special year. If all goes well then Peterson will be right there with Peterson in the end.

2. Maurice Jones-Drew – Jones-Drew has been productive for a while now for Jacksonville, yet up to now he has had to split carries. Fred Taylor is gone now, and Jones-Drew is unquestionably the number one guy. The team has a good offensive line and has always run well, so Jones-Drew stands to profit from that. He had 1120 yards as a part-timer last year, so he has lots of room for growth this year.

3. Chris Johnson – Johnson was another stud rookie last year. He’ll be sharing carries with LenDale White again this year, but there is no reason to believe that Johnson won’t still get his share of touches – it’s not like the Titans significantly upgraded their passing game this year. I look for both his yardage and his rushing touchdown total to take a step upwards this year. Johnson is the real deal.

4. Frank Gore – Gore is as good as they get. He has been struggling with injuries, but he’s completely healthy, the offensive should use lots of running this year, and he has a bull of a fullback in Moran Norris to follow again. Norris was with theNiners when Gore was at his best, so he’s a big component. Gore could put up huge numbers for what should be an improved Niners team this year.

5. Steve Slaton – Slaton showed his talent last year. The Texans don’t have a good second option in the backfield, so he’s going to get lots of chances to shine again this year. If Matt Schaub can stay healthy (a very big if) then Slaton will play in a more consistent offense than he did last year, and he should benefit from that. He’s also reportedly a bit stronger this year, and that will help him finish off the shorter runs. Houston should be improved this year, and that is very good news for Slaton.

Peterson is the best running back on the planet, and I don’t even think it is close right now.
