{"id":16888,"date":"2011-08-07T13:30:08","date_gmt":"2011-08-07T18:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.madduxsports.com\/blog\/?p=16888"},"modified":"2011-08-07T13:30:10","modified_gmt":"2011-08-07T18:30:10","slug":"2011-michigan-wolverines-college-football-preview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.madduxsports.com\/blog\/2011-michigan-wolverines-college-football-preview-16888\/","title":{"rendered":"2011 Michigan Wolverines College Football Preview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Michigan Wolverines<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2010 record:\u00a0 7-6 overall, 3-5 conference<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2010 Bowl Game:\u00a0 52-14 loss versus Mississippi St in Gator Bowl<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2010 ATS:\u00a0 3-10<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2010 O\/U:\u00a0 8-5<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Returning starters: \u00a016 total (9 on offense, 7 on defense)<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7144\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madduxsports.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Denard-Robinson-michigan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7144\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madduxsports.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Denard-Robinson-michigan-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.madduxsports.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Denard-Robinson-michigan-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.madduxsports.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Denard-Robinson-michigan.jpg 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Michigan Wolverines hope to improve upon their 3-10 ATS record from last year<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over the month of August, our team of writers will be previewing the top teams heading into an exciting 2011 campaign.\u00a0 The college football handicappers at Maddux Sports are also preparing and have season-long packages readily available for clients.\u00a0 Let\u2019s head to Ann Arbor, Michigan where another coaching staff has taken over.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Offense<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Few players captivated the nation more offensively than junior quarterback Denard Robinson, who led the Wolverines to finish the season with the Big Ten\u2019s top-ranked offense, averaging 488.7 yards per game.<\/p>\n<p>A drop off is expected due to a switch from former head coach Rich Rodriguez\u2019s spread offense to a more traditional scheme under Brady Hoke.\u00a0 Robinson will still be considered an explosive player after setting the school\u2019s single-season record for total offense (4,272 yards).<\/p>\n<p>Nine of its top 10 pass catchers return, including junior Roy Roundtree, who many believe will be a breakout star in 2011.\u00a0 He\u2019s the team\u2019s active leader in career receiving yards and receptions and must be accounted for by opposing defenses on every play.<\/p>\n<p>Offensive coordinator Al Borges is aware of the receiving core\u2019s talent, but will be focusing on the backfield in camp.\u00a0 The leading returning rusher in terms of running back is junior Vincent Smith, running for 601 yards and five touchdowns a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>The offensive line lost two starters and will be undergoing the biggest adjustment during the installation of the new offensive scheme.\u00a0 Michigan will have a run through of its new scheme in opening against Western Michigan before a showdown against Notre Dame.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Defense<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Easily one of the most scrutinized units on either side of the ball in the entire country, ranking 108th and 110th respectively in scoring and total defense.<\/p>\n<p>Defensive coordinator Greg Mattison will abandon the 3-3-5 scheme instituted under Rodriguez and will go with a conventional 4-3 alignment.<\/p>\n<p>The strength entering a new season will be the defensive line, led by All-Big Ten second-team member Mike Martin.\u00a0 He\u2019s a roadblock that many teams will have to double team in order to run the football.<\/p>\n<p>Kenny Demens figures to be the unquestionable leader by playing the middle linebacker position, making 82 tackles last year after becoming the starter midway through the 2010 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of the unit\u2019s success will ultimately hinge on cornerbacks Troy Woolfolk and J.T.
