When the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Indianapolis Colts, the NFL no longer had an undefeated team. Through just 5 games, every team in the League has at least one loss. Michigan State (-7) vs. Illinois– Michigan State opened as a 7 ½ point favorite against an upstart Illinois team and line has gone to -7. The Spartans are looking to build off their recent wins over Wisconsin and Michigan, while Illinois is aiming to knock off another Big 10 powerhouse on the road. Sparty has to be careful not to take the Illini lightly – Illinois dominated Penn State in Happy Valley.
The NFL seems to have its most competitive season yet. Parity is the norm, and no one team is head and shoulders above the rest. Pittsburgh looked to be the early season favorite, but they couldn’t handle the Ravens at home. Indy had played great football the past two weeks, but lost to the hapless Jags on a last second, 59 yard field goal. And the defending champs nearly lost another home game, this time to the Panthers and their rookie quarterback, Jimmy Clausen.
The fifth week of the college football season helped to answer some questions. Yes, Alabama is that good. Yes, USC’s defense is that bad. Yes, Oregon has a chance to play for the national championship. No, Ohio State won’t run over the Big 10. No, the Big 12 isn’t as good as it used to be. No, Miami and Iowa aren’t out of the national championship discussion just yet.
The third week of NFL action allowed for perspective to be had about certain teams. The Steelers have been the best team so far, and it doesn’t matter who is playing quarterback. The Chiefs are the NFL’s biggest surprise, and they’re already 2 games ahead in the AFC West. The Patriots’ defense is going to have serious problems this year. The Saints are still a good football team, but seem to have lost their magic. And neither Minnesota nor Dallas is dead yet.
