The Red Sox are hoping to earn a split in this four-game series and see their talented left-hander bounce back from a bad stretch.

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

Boston will try to salvage a split in this four-game series after dropping the last two contests, including a 7-2 defeat last night on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.  “This was a huge opportunity for us, trying to gain ground on these guys and Tampa Bay,” said third baseman Adrian Beltre.  “But unfortunately it didn’t work out the way we wanted.”  The Red Sox are now seven games back of the Yankees and 4.5 away in the Wild Card race.  The club is now an even 4-4 this month (-340) and 38-25 in August the last three years (+780).  Boston has also slipped up against divisional foes in 2010, posting a 21-22 record (-530), with the total being 24-17 O/U in those games.  The banged up ball  club did receive some encouraging news over the weekend, as second baseman Dustin Pedroia (left foot) has plans of returning to the lineup on August 17

The Red Sox return home after a 10-game road trip and face off against a banged up Tigers club.

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox

Detroit has lost 13 of its last 16 games and has fallen into third place in the AL Central race.  “We’re in emergency mode,” manager Jim Leyland said after Thursday’s loss in Tampa.  “When I say that, I’m saying we just have to fight our tails off every day.”  This three-game series at Fenway will cap an 11-game stretch against the AL East foes for the club.  The Tigers are currently 2-6 in that span and 10-8 against the division this season.  Detroit may find itself as a +225 to +250 road underdog for just the second time in three years, while they are a dismal 16-33 overall away from Comerica Park (-1,750).  The team has lost 22 of its last 30 games in Boston and has dropped 10 straight overall on the road.

Today we spotlight a great matchup in each league before the focus turns to interleague baseball this weekend.

Minnesota Twins at Boston Red Sox

Minnesota is 2-4 on its current road trip, after dropping Wednesday night’s game, 3-2, to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.  The Twins now have a 6-7 record against the American League East, their only losing record against a division this season (15-8 vs. Central, 3-1 vs. West).  Ending the current road trip in winning fashion may prove difficult, with the team now having lost six straight games at Fenway Park to the Red Sox.   However, they do find themselves in a favorable position on Thursday, facing a left-handed starter.  The Twins are 9-3 (+620) versus southpaws during the 2010 season and the opposing starter has yet to pick up a career win against them in his career.  Minnesota is batting .295 overall against left-handers – good for second in the majors to only the New York Yankees.  C Joe Mauer (.390) and Justin Morneau (.382) lead the way in that category.

Mondays aren’t supposed to be busy days on the sports front, but this one certainly was. Here are five things that caught my eye today:

1. It was covered here by someone else earlier tonight, but I have to touch on Jon Lester again. Impressive on a couple of fronts – Boston having two no-hitters in less than a year, Jason Varitek catching both games, Lester’s story. It would be an even better story if it had have been against a major league team instead of the Triple-A adequate Kansas City Royals. Based on what I wrote here last week I’ll be taking a very close look at Lester next time out.
