This week’s EPL card features some of the heavy hitters again, after they all went off to play in the Carling Cup last week. Manchester United is back in EPL action, always a popular pick for bettors due to their prolific offense and overall dominance. Here’s a look at their game as well as the others this Saturday, and both Sunday games are covered, as well.
The Premiership kicks off an extremely busy week on Saturday with a 7-game slate. With a total of 20 games scheduled over the next 5 days, each game has added weight as no team can afford to have a bad week and fall too far in the standings. We’ll take a look at all of Saturday’s games, preview each one, and give out our free picks for each. All English Premier League odds are taken from Bodog.
Sunderland (14th) at Blackburn Rovers (15th) / Ewood Park / 3:00 PM ET – After seven games, Sunderland’s biggest problem has been exposed. Although the Black Cats have been able to perform well defensively, they haven’t been able to generate enough goals. Because of this, despite holding the powerful offenses of Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United to 2 total goals, they managed only 2 points total in those three games. This lack of offensive output has caused the team to fall to 14th place in the Premiership standings despite having suffered only one loss. Unfortunately, their cause looks will get worse before it gets any better. Leading scorer Darren Bent, who has recently been promoted to start along side Wayne Rooney for the English national team in its upcoming European Championship match against Montenegro, will be sidelined by a groin strain for Monday’s EPL match. Blackburn’s problems have been on the defensive end. The Rovers have not held a team scoreless since their season-opening 1-0 victory over Everton. They have been able to score consistently, but their porous defense has led to too many lost points. Although both teams have struggled to find consistency in all parts of the field, Blackburn has been the slightly better performer, showing better overall results against better competition. The recent news that striker Benjani Mwaruwari has retired from the Zimbabwe national team to focus the remaining years of his career at the club level should give a boost the Blackburn attack. Mwaruwari is not the striker he once was, but he can still be effective, especially against a team like Sunderland. Now that he’ll be eliminating the travel and general wear and tear of playing for both club and country and can focus entirely on the club level, Blackburn should see an improvement in his on-field performance. Blackburn will also enter the game knowing that a victory at home will bump them a minimum of 5 spots up in the Premiership standings. Both teams are desperate for points, as they don’t want to fall too far behind the pack. Although neither team has any expectations about finishing near the top of the English Premier League standings, they do both feel that they belong at least in the top half. This one should be close, but I give the slight edge to Blackburn.
Liverpool (18th) at Everton (17th) / Goodison Park / 8:30 AM ET – After seven games played, it’s still considered to be relatively early in the Premiership season. Unfortunately for Liverpool, the team has already entered into the situation where every single game falls into the “must win” category. Despite continued high expectations for the squad and the consistent optimism by the players and coaches, the team has yet to show any real signs of life. Since earning their only win of the season so far over a month ago, Liverpool has failed to build on that result. After a 0-0 draw at Birmingham City, the team has drawn one and lost two, allowing 7 goals in the process. This highlights the fact that, despite the sub-par performances of star striker Fernando Torres, the team’s biggest problems have been on the defensive end. Even after bad performances in pretty much every game up to this point, Liverpool continues to get respect by the oddsmakers. At this point, it seems clear to me that this is due mostly to the team’s name and reputation. However, with elite players like Torres and Steven Gerrard in the lineup, you have to think that, at some point, Liverpool will finally get its act together and become at least a respectable team this season. It feels like we say this every week, but Liverpool has a good opportunity for that breakout performance this weekend when they visit Everton. Despite coming off of their first win of the season, the Toffees have had problems finding consistent scoring options. Like Liverpool, they have underachieved by a huge margin this season. But, given that both teams have been equally bad so far this season, the tiebreaker has to go to the side with more talent. In this case, the easy winner is Liverpool.
